Preparations were underway on Monday at the sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima for Pope Francis’ first visit which will mark the 100th anniversary of the first apparition of the Virgin Mary.
Francis will arrive in Fatima on Friday evening and will visit the chapel of the apparitions on the same day.
During a public outdoor mass at the sanctuary esplanade on Saturda, Pope Francis will canonize Francisco Marto and his sister Jacinta Marto, two of the three shepherd children believed to have seen a vision of the Madonna 100 years ago.
The Pope’s visit is expected to attract about one million people, Portuguese media said, and seven hundred members of the Portuguese Civil Protection Department will be working on the esplanade during the pilgrimage before and after the papal visit.
“We have prepared a very large operation that will start on the tenth of May and will go on until the 14th that includes the 12th and the 13th when we have the visit of the Holy Pope,” Portuguese Civil Protection Commander, Miguel Cruz, said.
“We have a total of seven hundred staff on the field, on the ground that will be here on a permanent basis and they will support the operation.”
Pope Francis is also scheduled to meet Portugal’s president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Prime Minister Antonio Costa during his 22-hour visit to Fatima.
