Ekiti Assembly Chief Whip Defects From PDP To APC

Channels Tv
The Chief Whip of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Ms Cecilia Dada, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ms Dada disclosed this to reporters on Monday in Ado, the state capital. She explained that her decision was a result of the actions of the party’s leadership which she described as ‘killing’ to the party. The lawmaker is the second member of the PDP to defect to the ruling APC in the last two weeks.
Speaker of the Assembly, Adeniran Alagbada, had last week while receiving a lawmaker who joined the APC, stated that purported cracks within the fold of the Ekiti PDP were bringing fortunes to the APC.
There had been a division in the Ekiti PDP recently with the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abiodun Olujimi, and the immediate past governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose, coordinating different groups and claiming to be the authentic leaders of the party.
Former Governor Fayose took the tussle to another level when he came on air on a private radio station in the state, asking the people not to vote for Senator Olujimi who is the party’s candidate for Ekiti South Senatorial District in the general elections.
This new defection brings to five the number of APC lawmakers in the 26-member Assembly.
Ten PDP lawmakers are on suspension for alleged misconduct levelled against them on the day a former speaker of the House, Mr Kola Oluwawole, was impeached in October 2018.

Police Warn PDP Against Counter Rally Ahead Of Buhari’s Campaign In Benue

Channels Tv
The police have warned the Peoples Democratic Party in Benue State against holding any counter rally on Wednesday as only that of the All Progressive Congress (APC) had been approved to hold in Makurdi, the state capital.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Omololu Bishi, gave the warning on Tuesday after parading 12 suspected criminals.
Governor Ortom, however, clarified through his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, that the PDP’s youth rally will go on as planned in 22 local councils, excluding Makurdi where the APC’s presidential campaign is scheduled to hold.
Consequently, he said the rally has been shifted to Thursday.
He said, “I am aware that the leadership of the party, the state chairman of the PDP, has contacted the police to let them know that the party and the government of Benue state which is controlled by the PDP, recognizes that Mr President would be in the state tomorrow and has, therefore, asked that youth rallies should hold in 22 Local Government Areas and not Makurdi which has been moved to Thursday”.

26 Governorship Candidates, Others Sign Peace Accord In Kaduna

Channels Tv
Candidates of various political parties in Kaduna State have signed a peace accord ahead of the coming general elections.
The aspirants converged on the Kaduna State Police Command headquarters on Tuesday to sign an agreement to conduct themselves peacefully before, during and after the polls.
The state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who is seeking re-election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Isah Ashiru of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were among the 26 of the 39 governorship candidates who attended the signing ceremony.
Before signing the accord, representatives of some political parties raised concerns on the sincerity and commitment of some candidates to abide by the agreement. In his address, the Commissioner of Police in Kaduna, Mr Ahmad Abdulrahman, stressed the need for all the candidates and their supporters to conduct themselves in a peaceful and orderly manner.
According to him, this will ensure a peaceful atmosphere that will lead to a credible and acceptable electoral process.
Mr Abdulrahman said beyond the symbolic peace accord, the candidates must equally realise the need to be more democratic in the conduct of political activities within the ambit of the law. He urged them to embrace peace, as well as ensure understanding and respect for one another before, during and after the elections.
The Police commissioner stated the commitment of the command to ensuring an electoral environment free of intimidation. He, however, warned politicians to play the game by the rules and be conscious that there would always be winners and losers in every contest.
Speaking to reporters after the event, some candidates and political party leaders promised to abide by the peace agreement. They also asked the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a free and fair election.

AIB Concludes Investigation On Osinbajo's Chopper Crash

saharareporters
Three days after an Agusta AW 139 helicopter flying Vice President Yemi Osibanjo crashed in Kabba, Kogi State, the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) has concluded investigations on the accident.
The aircraft carrying Osinbajo and other occupants crash-landed in Kogi on Saturday. According to the Nation Newspaper, the  investigation came on the heels of gathering of series of evidences which included: inspection of the chopper wreckage at the crash site; interview of airline crew such as pilots, engineers and other technical personnel; analysing eyewitness accounts, as well as laboratory testing of the broken rotor and other parts of chopper.
The paper quoted a source at the AIB saying the preliminary report of the accident will be released in two days, but no probable cause(s) has been given as the reason for the crash.
Another source close to Caverton Helicopters, managers of the crashed chopper, said its insurers have arrived the country to participate in the probe. The source hinted that the insurers, sought permission from the AIB for access to the crash site to carry out valuation of the wreckage and other relevant activity critical to the accident probe.
Besides the insurers, it was not clear as at Monday if the helicopter manufacturer, Agusta, would participate in the inquiry. According to the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO)-prescribed aviation regulations, the aircraft manufacturers ought to participate in the investigation.
The involvement will enable the manufacturer learn useful lessons in preventing a reoccurrence; if there are issues with the equipment design or other technical hitches. Tunji Oketumbi, spokesman of the AIB, said the bureau had concluded preliminary investigation on the crash, which he described as “high profile”, because of the status of the occupant in the ill-fated chopper. He said an accident could be so described, if the aircraft was carrying many influential people; or there are many multi-nationals.
Oketumbi said: “So far, the AIB has done what is statutorily required of it. We did not require any foreign assistance. We have carried out the relevant findings at the crash site and interviewed the crew and other people relevant to the operation. So, far, the helicopter wreckage has not been removed.”
He, however, took exception to the remarks attributed to Caverton Helicopters which suggested the probable cause(s) of the crash.
According to him, besides giving flight information – type of aircraft; registration number; number of occupant in the aircraft and circumstances of the accident, the airline should refrain from speculating the cause of the crash. Doing such, Oketumbi said, would amount to pre-empting the investigation.

2014 Immigration Misadventure Won't Affect My Political Ambition, Says Abba Moro

saharareporters
Abba Moro, Nigeria's former Minister of Interior, says he doesn't think the tragedy that took place during a recruitment exercise into the Nigeria Immigration Service in 2014, would affect his political ambition.
In March 2014, job seekers died during a series of tragic incidents that occurred in various centres across the country, when millions of applicants converged at various venues for the recruitment test. Hundreds sustained injuries, while those that fainted were not left out. Each applicant paid N1,000.
Moro is currently seeking a seat in the National Assembly as the senatorial candidate for Benue South on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking in an interview with The Punch newspaper, published on Tuesday, Moro said he was contesting the seat to ensure the creation of employment opportunities for the youth, as well as to bring development to his district.
Speaking on the 2014 tragedy, he said: "The Nigeria Immigration Service recruitment misadventure was actually a low point in my burgeoning career.
"I feel very sad each time I think about it because it involved the loss of innocent lives. It clearly showed people were not doing their part in an otherwise patriotic exercise. I don’t think it would negatively affect my chances in 2019 general elections."
On how he hopes to take over from Senator David Mark, who has represented the district for 20 years, he added: "I have said it before that Senator David Mark is leaving big shoes in vacating the Benue South Senatorial District. He has made a giant stride. Now that he is leaving the stage,  someone must step in to take his place which is the reason why I came into the race.
"I have followed Senator Mark to many places, I have been his director general twice and also his lieutenant, so I know the direction he wants to take the Idoma people to. Some of those coming into the race don’t know the aspirations of the people. They don’t know where to start.
"My focus will be to essentially to create jobs for the youth that have finished school and haven’t got jobs. I will leverage my goodwill to ensure the development of our people. Some of our roads are death traps. We have the problem of potable water. All these will be my focus. I will create an enabling environment to provide a good education for my people because knowledge is power."

Buratai Orders Clampdown On IPOB, Others

saharareporters
Tukur  Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff, has given an order to the General Officer Commanding (GOC) and Formation Commanders (Brigade Commanders) in the South East Area of Responsibility (AOR) to immediately embark on a clampdown on the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and other such groups.
Buratai made this known at the opening of the 2019 Chief of Army Staff conference in Abuja on Monday, to review the conduct of Egwu Eke III. The conference was also to appraise the preparations being made by various formations towards the smooth execution of Op Safe Conduct before, during and after the 2019 general election.
Speaking on the reason for the clampdown directive, Buratai said: “This is because the activities of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and their splinter groups in the South Eastern part of the country are gaining momentum as the group is threatening to disrupt the 2019 electoral process.
“Their excesses must, therefore, be clamped down immediately."
He noted that political clashes in Taraba and a few other states called for enhanced liaison between Commanders, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies in order to de-escalate tension as quickly as possible.
The COAS disclosed that Army has credible information of subversive motives by some unpatriotic groups aided by foreign conspirators to scuttle the peaceful conduct of the 2019 elections in parts of the country and warned such detractors to desist from carrying out illegal activities.
He said the Nigerian Army would be working closely with the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to ensure smooth conduct of the elections.
“In this regard, GOCs and field Commanders at all levels are to deal decisively with any form of security breach.
"All Nigerian Army personnel must remain neutral, non-partisan and transparent in all their actions.
“I need to reiterate that there will be zero tolerance for any action and in-action by Commanders at all levels that are deemed tilted towards giving undue advantage to any candidate, political party, ethnic or religious leanings to the detriment of the unity and integrity of Nigeria.
“This includes knowingly or unknowingly receiving any form of inducement from politicians or other entities, be it public or private
“I have issued my operational directives for Operation Safe Conduct for the 2019 general election. The Nigerian Army has also produced a Code of Conduct Handbook for personnel to guide them during the elections and copies have been distributed to all formations.
“You are to ensure that all personnel read and imbibe its contents and those deployed for Op Safe Conduct are to be issued a copy each."

General Motors sacks 4000 workers

NAN
General Motors Co on Monday said it has started the sack of about 4,000 salaried workers in the latest round of a restructuring announced in late November.
The retrenchment will ultimately shrink its white-collar workforce in North America by 15 percent out of 54,000. Two persons briefed on the cuts said GM is cutting hundreds of jobs at its information technology centres in Texas, Georgia, Arizona and Michigan and more than 1,000 jobs at its Warren, Michigan Tech Center. GM is filing new required mass layoff notices with state agencies and disclosed the cuts to lawmakers.
The largest U.S. automaker announced in November it would cut a total of about 15,000 jobs and end production at five North American plants. The cuts include eliminating about 8,000 salaried workers, or about 15 percent. GM cut about 1,500 contract workers in December and said 2,300 salaried workers accepted buyouts, officials said.
“These actions are necessary to secure the future of the company, including preserving thousands of jobs in the U.S. and globally. We are taking action now while the overall economy and job market are strong, increasing the ability of impacted employees to continue to advance in their careers, should they choose to do so,” GM spokesman Pat Morrissey said, adding the bulk of the cuts should be completed in the next two weeks.
Morrissey said GM would provide salaried workers with severance packages and job placement services. GM is also cutting its executive ranks by 25 percent and last week laid off three senior people in its Washington office and some other small salaried layoffs previously took place.
President Donald Trump and U.S. and Canadian lawmakers have blasted GM’s plans to end production at plants in Ontario, Michigan, Ohio and Maryland. GM said in November it would end U.S. and Canadian production of the Chevrolet Cruze, Volt, Impala, the Buick LaCrosse and the Cadillac XTS and CT6 sedans.
Trump, who made a 2017 speech near GM’s Lordstown Assembly plant in Ohio, said in November the company had “better” find a new product for that plant. But GM Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra wrote last week: “We are more convinced than ever that our strategy is sound and in the long term.”
Last month, Comprehensive Logistics said it would cease operations at its facility in Lordstown that provides logistics and warehousing, impacting about 180 jobs. Magna International Inc is also laying off about 120 people at its Lordstown Seating Systems plant that makes seats for GM vehicles.

The new chairman pledged to eschew, expose and fight corruption. He also said that he was encouraged by the unquestionable, unshakeable and unequivocal stand of the President against corruption, which indicated a very strong political will to fight corruption.

Senatorial seat: Orji Kalu promises educational opportunities, effective representation

NAN
The All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Abia North Senatorial seat, Dr Orji Kalu, has vowed to ensure that Abia indigenes and non-indigenes enjoy equal educational opportunities if elected. In a statement issued by Mr Peter Eze, Media Officer, Orji Campaign Group, Orji spoke at the commencement of his ward to ward campaigns, in Igbere, Bende Local Government Area of Abia, his country home.
Addressing his supporters in Ohumuola Igbere, Orji said that his commitment to press for equal opportunities for all was informed by the need to implement comprehensive free education in the state. He recalled that when he served as governor of Abia for eight years, his vision was for all in the state to have equal opportunity in education. According to him, “education is the most important factor in governance; hence the welfare of students and teachers was a priority for our government.”
“When I was governor, the educational edge that Abia people had over the rest of the country was as a result of the free compulsory primary and secondary schooling, introduced by our government.
“Through our free education policy, we were able to discourage the incidence of dropping out at primary and secondary levels of education.
“We also encouraged adult and non-formal education with several skills and acquisition centres.
“But today it is shocking that many of the schools we built have neither been expanded nor maintained’’.
He further alleged that salaries and pensions were not paid to teachers and retired civil servants in the state, as and when due.
“We are supposed to progress and not regress.
“There is something about educational environment that is no longer there. How can you owe teachers’ salaries for months,’’ Orji said. Other communities visited by the campaign group are Amaiyi, Okafia and Amaoji.
In all the communities, the former governor promised the communities of effective representation, adding that he would use his connections to further attract projects to the area. With him at the campaigns were APC governorship candidate for Ebonyi, Sen. Sunny Ogbuoji, among others.

Reuters: How Atiku secured temporary waiver of US visa ban

NAN
Reuters has reported that Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party was able to visit Washington, United States  two weeks ago to meet with top U.S. diplomats and lawmakers due  to a temporary suspension of a travel ban.
The news agency said the visa ban, which is still in place,  was  linked to decade-old bribery scandals, quoting  people familiar with the matter. The U.S. administration has not commented on Atiku’s status or his travel, but several U.S. diplomats and others familiar with the visit told Reuters the former vice president has been banned from entering the United States for the past several years after he figured prominently in two corruption cases. For Atiku’s supporters, the fact he was able to visit Washington on Jan. 17 and 18 without being arrested was proof that the allegations were baseless.
“It is fake news, and we showed that,” said Harold Molokwu, who heads the U.S. chapter of Atiku’s People’s Democratic Party of Nigeria.

Several U.S. government officials said the travel ban was waived temporarily by the U.S. State Department after lobbyists mounted a campaign among congressional lawmakers arguing that the administration should not snub the leading challenger to Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari in the Feb. 16 election.

Several U.S. government officials said the travel ban was waived temporarily by the U.S. State Department after lobbyists mounted a campaign among congressional lawmakers arguing that the administration should not snub the leading challenger to Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari in the Feb. 16 election. One person familiar with the matter, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Atiku was allowed to enter because the United States saw little benefit to creating bad blood with the man who might be the next leader of Africa’s most populous nation and the continent’s biggest oil producer.

Lobbyists hired by Atiku said they sought to overcome resistance at the State Department by securing support from members of Congress for the visit, as well as arguing that the top U.S. official for African affairs, Assistant Secretary Tibor Nagy, had an obligation to encourage democracy in the seventh most populous country in the world.
“Assistant Secretary Nagy was pleased to meet with him and share the U.S. government’s expectations that Nigeria’s elections be free, fair, transparent, and peaceful, and reflect the will of the Nigerian people,” a State Department official said, stressing the department had not requested the waiver.
Buhari first took power in a military coup in the 1980s but was democratically elected in 2015. He is seeking a second term in part on an anti-corruption platform. Atiku’s visa troubles stem from when he served as Nigeria’s vice president, from 1999 to 2007. He figured prominently in the corruption trial of former U.S. Representative William Jefferson, who was accused of trying to bribe Atiku in an effort to expand a technology business in Nigeria. Jefferson was convicted in 2009 and sentenced to 13 years in prison. His sentence was subsequently reduced.
Separately U.S. Senate investigators in 2010 alleged that one of Atiku’s four wives helped him transfer more than $40 million in “suspect funds” into the United States from offshore shell companies. At least $1.7 million of that money was bribes paid by German technology company Siemens AG, according to Senate investigators. Siemens pleaded guilty to bribery charges in 2008 and agreed to pay a $1.6 billion fine. Atiku has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing. Neither he nor his wife face criminal charges in the United States.
“These issues have been addressed several times in the past and we do not wish to comment further on them,” a spokesman for Atiku said when asked about the corruption allegations.

Holland & Knight was hired by Atiku personally in December to help him secure a visa, in part by enlisting members of Congress to request one on his behalf, according to a lobbyist for the firm. It has been paid $80,000 so far.Ballard Partners was hired by Atiku’s political party at a rate of $90,000 per month in September, before Atiku emerged as the party’s candidate, according to U.S. disclosure filings.
Atiku’s whirlwind visit to Washington last month was put together with the help of two U.S. lobbying firms. Holland & Knight was hired by Atiku personally in December to help him secure a visa, in part by enlisting members of Congress to request one on his behalf, according to a lobbyist for the firm. It has been paid $80,000 so far. Ballard Partners was hired by Atiku’s political party at a rate of $90,000 per month in September, before Atiku emerged as the party’s candidate, according to U.S. disclosure filings. The firm’s lobbyists worked to set up a meeting with Nagy, arguing it would show that the United States wanted to encourage free and fair elections in a country where graft is endemic.
“We are not asking the administration or anyone to take sides, but to merely demand the same level of freeness and fairness,” Ballard lobbyist Jamie Rubin told Reuters.
Aside from Nagy, Atiku met with business leaders at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and at least two Republican lawmakers in the House of Representatives who specialise in foreign affairs, Representative Michael McCaul of Texas and Representative Chris Smith of New Jersey.
Neither requested a visa waiver for Atiku, spokespersons for the two congressmen said. Atiku stayed at the Trump International Hotel, owned by the president, and met with several hundred Nigerian expatriates there, according to two people who attended the gathering.
The luxury hotel is the subject of several lawsuits that allege Trump is violating an anti-corruption clause in the U.S. Constitution that limits the president’s ability to accept gifts from foreign governments. Atiku’s supporters say they chose the hotel because they were able to book rooms at a discounted rate with only a few days’ notice.
“I think it was because of the availability of the space,” said Uche Udemadu, an official with the U.S. chapter of the People’s Democratic Party of Nigeria.
A spokeswoman for the hotel declined to comment.

Onnoghen’s Suspension: Senate Discontinues Supreme Court Case, Lauds NJC’s Intervention

The Senate has ordered the discontinuation of the case filed at the Supreme Court on the suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria.
Special Adviser to Senate President Bukola Saraki, Yusuph Olaniyonu, disclosed this in a statement on Monday. According to him, the decision following the intervention of the National Judicial Council (NJC) on the issue.
Olaniyonu explained that the lawmakers decided to discontinue the case at the apex court in order to give the NJC intervention a chance.
“The Senate has, therefore, decided to discontinue the case it filed in the Supreme Court,” he said. “It should be noted that the case has been slated for hearing tomorrow (Tuesday).
“This decision also affirms the confidence of the Senate in the ability of the NJC to successfully and creditably resolve the issues,” the Senate President’s media aide added.

The President had explained that his decision followed an order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), pending the completion of Onnoghen’s trial. The Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) had dragged Justice Onnoghen before the Tribunal over allegations of non-declaration of assets.
The President’s decision sparked widespread criticism from individuals and groups within and outside the country. Lawmakers at the upper chamber of the National Assembly had planned to reconvene but later filed a case at the Supreme Court on the suspension of Justice Onnoghen.
They had sought the interpretation of the court on whether President Buhari acted within the provision of the Constitution in suspending Onnoghen.
The Senate also asked the court to determine whether the action of the President does amount to usurpation of the powers of the Red Chamber, as provided for in Section 292 of the Constitution. On Tuesday last week, the NJC held an emergency meeting which was presided over by a former president of the Appeal Court, Justice Umar Abdullahi.
The judicial body gave Justice Onnoghen and Justice Tanko seven working days to respond to different petitions against them. The NJC is expected to reconvene on Monday next week.

Court Stays Execution On Judgement Excluding Rivers APC From General Elections

Channels Tv
The Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt on Monday granted a stay of execution of the Federal High Court judgement nullifying all primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State.
Apart from nullifying the primaries, Justice Kolawole Omotosho of the Federal High Court had also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from fielding the party’s candidates in the forthcoming general elections in the state. But Justice Ali Gumel, who presided on an appeal filed by a faction of the APC in Rivers, granted a stay of execution on the judgement delivered by Justice Omotosho on January 7.

However, the counsels to the Magnus Abe-led faction of the APC argued that a stay of execution cannot be granted on a matter that was already done. They added that no order was granted by the court to the electoral umpire. Justice Gumel granted the stay of execution four days after the appeal court reserved its ruling on the matter till today.
The ruling also comes less than two weeks to the general elections. In his judgment delivered in January, Justice Omotosho had nullified the direct and indirect primaries conducted by the two factions of the APC in Rivers on the grounds that they were not conducted according to the law. The judged had restrained INEC from recognising the two APC governorship candidates that emerged from the primaries – Tonye Cole and Magnus Abe.
Senator Abe was declared the winner of a direct primary conducted by an APC faction after polling 144, 929 votes. However, Cole was declared the winner with 3,329 votes in an indirect primary held by another faction of the party in the state.
INEC, on its part, went ahead to publish the names of candidates for the elections in Rivers without including those on the APC platform, in line with the ruling of the Federal High Court.

US Rapper 21 Savage Arrested For Overstaying His Visa

Rapper 21 Savage, who has long said he is from the US state of Georgia, was detained on Sunday by US immigration officers who say he is actually British and overstayed his visa.
The news sent shockwaves through social media as the Grammy-nominated 26-year-old rapper — whose real name is Sha Yaa Bin Abraham Joseph — says he is a local act from Atlanta, the capital of hip hop.
“We are working diligently to get Mr Abraham-Joseph out of detention while we work with the authorities to clear up any misunderstandings,” the rapper’s lawyer, Dina LaPolt, said in a statement to AFP.
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Bryan Cox told the local Atlanta Journal-Constitution outlet that 21 Savage is an “unlawfully present the United Kingdom national” who entered the United States in 2005 on a visa that expired one year later.
The US agency also told the paper he had been arrested and later convicted for felony drug charges in 2014 — but at the time, ICE was unaware that he was in fact British. According to the paper, 21 Savage was arrested in a “targeted operation.”
The artist, known for his conversational rap delivery and no-nonsense sincerity, released his debut studio album in 2017. His lyrics touch on everything from drugs and violence to systemic racism and police brutality. His sophomore album, “I Am > I Was” debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 in December 2018, holding the number one spot for two consecutive weeks.
The rapper is up next week for two Grammys for his work on fellow rapper Post Malone’s smash hit “Rockstar,” including for the major Record of the Year award.

21 Savage Faces Deportation After Shock Arrest

Channels Tv
The surprise arrest of rapper 21 Savage on allegations that he is in the United States illegally has sparked an outpouring of support for the artist facing potential deportation.
The 26-year old rapper — whose real name is Sha Yaa Bin Abraham Joseph — was arrested in the southern city of Atlanta Sunday by immigration agents who say he is, in fact, a British citizen.
The artist has long said he is a local act from Atlanta, the state capital of Georgia, which is considered the home of hip hop innovation. According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokesman Bryan Cox, however, 21 Savage came to the US legally as a minor in July 2005 — “but subsequently failed to depart under the terms of his nonimmigrant visa and he became unlawfully present in the US when his visa expired in July 2006.”
In his statement, Cox added that the artist was convicted of felony drug charges in October 2014.
“Mr. Abraham-Joseph is presently in ICE custody in Georgia and has been placed into removal proceedings before the federal immigration courts,” the statement said.
The rapper’s arrest came days after he performed at a pre-Super Bowl concert prior to the championship American football game hosted in Atlanta.
In a statement Sunday night, his lawyer Dina LaPolt said, “We are working diligently to get Mr Abraham-Joseph out of detention while we work with the authorities to clear up any misunderstandings.”
The news sent shockwaves through social media, with a number of top artists and industry insiders backing the young rapper.
“SUCCESSFUL BLACK MAN,” tweeted rapper Offset, one-third of the Atlanta trap trio Migos. “THEY ALWAYS TRY SOME WAY TO BRING US DOWN.”
“HIS FAMILY DEPENDING ON HIM,” wrote Offset, referencing 21 Savage’s three children.
“Free 21,” tweeted hip hop artist Meek Mill, who was released from prison last year after his unexpectedly heavy sentence for a parole violation sparked protests over racial bias in US probation laws.
Rappers Lil Yachty and Vince Staples echoed that call, along with Alex Tumay, a mix engineer who regularly works with Atlanta artists.
“Abolish ICE,” Tumay tweeted. “ICE arresting celebrities to divert attention from the fact they just admitted they can’t reconnect kids with their parents.”
The US agency has come under fire in recent months for its aggressive deportation policy.

Murky origins

21 Savage, known for his conversational, subdued rap delivery and no-nonsense demeanor, released his debut studio album in 2017.
His lyrics touch on everything from drugs and violence to systemic racism and police brutality. His second album, “I Am > I Was” debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 in December 2018, holding the number one spot for two consecutive weeks. The rapper is up Sunday for two Grammys for his work on fellow rapper Post Malone’s smash hit “Rockstar,” including for the major Record of the Year award.
Throughout his rise to fame he has toured the United States but does not appear to have performed abroad. In public interviews he has not explicitly called himself American, but regularly references his upbringing in Atlanta. Many of the artist’s supporters were quick to note his contributions to the community.
“Mr Abraham-Joseph is a role model to the young people in this country, especially in Atlanta,” his lawyer LaPolt said, adding that he is “actively working in the community leading programs to help underprivileged youths in financial literacy.”
Since the news of 21 Savage’s arrest broke British reports have indicated he originally is from Newham in East London, a detail neither ICE nor his team have commented on.
In 2016 the rapper — who speaks with a thick southern American accent — gave an interview to urban news YouTube channel VladTV, listing a number of Atlanta neighborhoods he has called home.
“I done grew up in all Atlanta really, everybody know me,” he said. “If you don’t, you ain’t from this city.”
