Synagogue building ‘mystery’ plane likely a Nigerian Air Force jet

www.premiumtimesng.com
A “mysterious” aircraft videoed by security cameras as flying at least four times over the Lagos Synagogue Church building shortly before the structure collapsed killing more than 115 people in September, may have been a Nigerian Airforce jet, a coroner’s court heard Thursday.
The founder of the mega pentecostal church, TB Joshua blamed the airplane for the collapse of the building, saying the church was a targeted by terrorists.
The Lagos State government says the building was a violation of its regulations as its additional three floors was never approved by the government.
The building collapsed September 12 killing mostly South African nationals.
While testifying at the ongoing coroner’s inquest into the circumstances surrounding the collapse, Toyin Ayinde, the Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, disclosed that his ministry enquired from the aviation authorities about the identity of the aircraft.
Three days after the building collapse, Mr. Ayinde said officials from his ministry were sent to the church to check the coordinates of the site.
Afterwards, a copy of the coordinates and the CCTV footage of the incident was sent to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA.
The ministry also attached a three point question that sought to know the identity of the aircraft seen in the video, its altitude, and its flight path coordinates.
“The NCAA responded that there was a request by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) that they might conduct some rehearsals on that day,” said Mr. Ayinde.
The commissioner stated that their calculations determined that the NAF aircrafts would be flying at altitudes of about 1,100 feet above sea level – the equivalent of 109 floors above a building.
“We also discovered that the minimum distance the aircraft would be from the building was about 137 metres, equivalent to one and half-length of a standard football field,” said Mr. Ayinde.
In the CCTV footage released by the church after the incident, an aircraft was seen flying over the building on the morning of September 12. On four occasions, an aircraft flew over the building, and minutes later, the entire structure crumbled.
T.B Joshua, the church’s founder, had blamed the “strange plane hovering above the building” for the collapse.
During Thursday’s proceedings, the CCTV footage was replayed in court.
A still image of an aircraft flying close to the building, taken with a mobile phone by a member of the church, was also displayed.
Mr. Ayinde said he could not tell if it was the same aircraft that flew over the building four times. And the letter from NCAA did not specifically identify the aircraft in the CCTV footage.
“I didn’t see a hovering of an aircraft, I saw aircraft but not hovering. There is a uniform directional movement and it is understandable because that area is close to the airport,” said Mr. Ayinde, adding that the display in court was the second time he was watching the footage.
“I cannot confirm that it is the same aircraft, it could be four different aircrafts moving in the same pattern. I did not see that the aircraft move remarkably close to the collapsed building.”
During cross examination by Olalekan Ojo, the church’s lawyer, Mr. Ayinde said he could not tell if the aircraft was flying below the estimated altitude.
Mr. Ojo said that residents of Ikotun, the area where the church is situated, had lodged a complaint at their local police station about aircrafts flying at “very low levels” before the September 12
incident.
“When they say an aircraft cannot fly below a particular altitude, it’s just a regulation. It does not mean that it cannot actually fly below that altitude,” the lawyer insisted.
Mr. Ayinde said he could not determine the distance of the aircraft seen in the video from the building, and that the position of the CCTV needs to be ascertained.
“In my profession, there is what is called proportion. When you look at where that aircraft is, in terms of proportion, it is not that size of the aircraft you’ll be seeing.”
Thursday’s proceedings lasted almost five hours, with the coroner granting the SCOAN counsel’s request for a 15 minute recess midway into the sitting to enable him consult with the church members.
When the inquest reconvened, Mr. Ojo informed the court that the church member who took the still photo of the aircraft above the building was in court.
But Mr. Ayinde said he disagreed with the photo, noting that there was no date and time on it.
“If someone is standing at Ground Zero, there is no how what you’ll see is only the top floor (of the building) and the aircraft,” he said.
The coroner’s inquest continues on November 5.

BREAKING: Burkina Faso’s Compaore resigns after violent protests

www.premiumtimesng.com
Burkina Faso’s President Blaise Compaore, one of Africa’s longest-serving autocrats, has resigned, forced out of power by a popular revolt over his attempt to extend his 27-year rule by additional five years.
Mr. Compaore is no longer in power, the army confirmed Friday, a day after protesters set fire on the parliament, marched on the presidential villa and at least three people died.
Mr. Compaore had earlier said he would step down after a 12-month transitional government had ended.
However, the opposition continued to demand that he resign, angry at his attempts to amend the constitution and extend his rule.
The army imposed curfew Thursday and announced a transitional government that will last one year, but refused to state clearly who will lead the government.
The head of the armed forces, General Honore Traore, had earlier dissolved parliament and announced talks with all political parties.
Hundreds of soldiers in Burkina Faso on Thursday joined demonstrators opposing plans to extend Mr. Compaore’s nearly three-decade rule, Radio France Internationale reported.

Solution To Nigerian Football Crisis Is Government’s Withdrawal – Tijani

Channels Tv
Veteran Sports Journalist, Kayode Tijani, says the solution to the crisis that has continued to rock Nigerian Football and its administration is for the Nigerian Government to embrace total withdrawal from Nigerian football.
Speaking on the Friday edition of Sunrise Daily on Channels Television, Tijani said that the reason why the National Sports Commission, NSC, would always want to lord it over the Nigerian Football Federation is because there is so much money in the federation being put in by the government.
Nigeria escaped yet another FIFA ban as it beat the deadline set by the world football governing body for it to resolve the leadership tussle it has been embroiled with, although some Nigerians have frowned at FIFA’s seeming disregard for Nigerian laws and administrative peculiarities.
This view, Tijani disagreed with, saying that Nigeria having agreed to belong to FIFA had agreed to abide by the rules of the body.
“A lot of people are getting it wrong. Germany, during the first war and the second war left FIFA because to FIFA ‘you can’ t be here because of all your problems’. The same thing happened to South Africa, even England at a time (when) they had some disagreement.”
He, however, also took a swipe at FIFA because of their many threats, “I am not saying FIFA is this squeaky clean (organisation), they are not.
“FIFA is one of the most corrupt organisations in the world but when they do their thing they do it very well.
“So for me, it is the (Nigerian) Government’s problem from time immemorial. The Act for the NFF has been there for the past eight years, why don’t you pass it to solve all these problems?”
A ban by FIFA would ensure that Nigeria loses the opportunity to appear at international football competitions both at club and country level and Tijani believes this would not have been a loss but would rather ensure that monies are not wasted.
Local League Development
While Tijani expressed happiness that the country was able to resolve its issues, he noted that the fear of being banned by FIFA should not be Nigerians’ concern but how to develop the game within the country.
He noted that the Nigerian league should be more important to Nigeria and not the fear of losing spots at FIFA’s international competitions.
He highlighted a number of factors militating against the growth of Nigerian football leagues as well as the challenges Nigerian clubs were facing, including the situation whereby several players were not being paid their salaries.
Kayode mentioned some European leagues, as well as the South-African league as examples of places where governments have no hand in the management of their leagues.
“In Germany, the only involvement of government is infrastructure,” he said, maintaining his earlier stance that the Federal Government of Nigeria has to withdraw its direct involvement with the management and funding of the game.
Super Eagles
Tijani also had some words for the players and handlers of the Super Eagles as Nigerians look forward to the team’s next African Cup of Nations qualifier.
“Are we going to win? I don’t know. Stephen Keshi to me is a hero, he’s done so much but…why holding us to ransom with players who are not going to perform? The likes of Mikel, I don’t know why.
“Muda Lawal in midfield? Mikel? I can never compare a Mikel or some of these players who are holding us to ransom.
“I was in Sudan with them, they were talking about playing on synthetic (pitch), I am in shock! Rashidi Yekini scored in Sudan in 1993 and that was not even a pitch!” he said passionately.

Tambuwal Defection Is APC Lawmakers’ Coup – PDP Member

Channels Tv
Former Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, (PDP) in Anambra State, Daniel Ulasi, says the defection of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal was a “coup”on the part of All Progressives Congress (APC) members in the House

“Once there is a coup, there has to be a level of planning which Tambuwal had been doing.”
He said that the Speaker’s action was to show his former party (PDP) that he could move and by doing so “destructing the political structure of Nigeria, making a whole zone lose their position”.
Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, the former Anambra PDP Chairman explained that while Hon. Tambuwal was announcing his defection into the APC, the Speaker was “economic with the truth while quoting the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and stating his interest”.
Mr Ulasi noted that Tambuwal did not reveal the part of the constitution that stated “If you do this, not just will you lose your office as a Speaker but will lose your seat as a member of the House of Reps”.
He further noted that the Tambuwal defection should have been followed immediately with a resignation by the Speaker, just like it is done in other countries.
Mr Ulasi questioned the use of democracy and its mandate, stating that the Speaker was misusing the mandate given to him.
Speaking on the withdrawal of the Speaker’s security aides by the Presidency, Mr. Ulasi said that it was due to the fact that he did not apply the section in the constitution where he is meant to resign after defection.

“The security forces are telling him that presently he is no more the Speaker or a member of the House of Reps,” he said.

Presidential Nomination: Ayo Obe Carpets PDP’s Decision

Channels Tv
Human Rights Activist and Legal Practitioner, Mrs Ayo Obe, is uncomfortable with the process adopted by the People’s Democratic Party for the 2015 presidential ticket.

Speaking on Channels Television few hours after President Goodluck Jonathan picked his presidential nomination form at the PDP secretariat in Abuja, she said that it sends a wrong signal for a sitting president not to go into primaries with other interested aspirants.
“I think the attempts to manoeuvre out the opposition within the party speaks to a lack of confidence which people find surprising in an incumbent president.
“Normally an incumbent president, firstly, within his own party, should be big enough to withstand any form of competition, not to talk of an incumbent president in the wider election having the confidence to say that he can beat all comers.
“You find all these little little things that are being done as though the President doesn’t have enough confidence in his ability to win even within his own party.”
The leadership of the PDP had endorsed President Jonathan as their sole candidate for the 2015 presidential election but some interested members of the party have complained of being denied their rights to challenge the President for the party’s ticket.
Mrs Obe said; “Its one thing to say that ‘I have emerged by consensus’ but when there are clearly people within the party who want to contest, then I think that it looks better from the perspective of that candidate to allow those people and contest with those people.”
She also suggested that this could form a precedence for incumbent senators, governors and those in other elective positions to demand automatic tickets.

According to her, some persons within the PDP would be of the opinion, “If its good enough for the President, then it should be good enough for us, in the name of continuity and wide acceptance and so on and so forth.”

Okorocha Condemns Withdrawal Of Tambuwal’s Security Details

Channels Tv
The Imo State Governor and Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governors’ Forum, Rochas Okorocha, has condemned the withdrawal of security details attached to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal.

In a statement through his media aide, Sam Onwuemueodo, the Governor said that the reason given by the Police to justify their action was untenable and unacceptable.
He stated that Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, irrespective of his political party, still remains the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives and by virtue of this position, he deserves to retain his security detail as his defection has nothing to do with his office.
The Governor said that it should be made clear that the Nigerian Police remains the property of all Nigerians irrespective of their groups or political affiliation and not that of the ruling party, PDP.

Governor Okorocha, however, enjoined the leadership of the Nigerian Police Force to demonstrate neutrality by restoring the withdrawn security details of the Speaker to avoid the action being interpreted as intimidation or undue harassment of the Speaker and the APC.

Alleged PDP directive on Akwa Ibom governorship zoning ‘false’ –Etiebet

www.premiumtimesng.com
In spite of reports that the National Working Committee of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had zoned the 2015 governorship ticket in Akwa Ibom State to Eket Senatorial District, a member of the Board of Trustees of the party from the state, Don Etiebet, has asked the people to ignore such reports saying the election is open for all.
The declaration by the former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Thursday, may have signaled the deepening of the crisis in the Akwa Ibom State chapter of the party over zoning and who would become the successor the governor Godswill Akpabio.
Describing the report as outright lies, Mr. Etiebet said he had inquired from the party’s National Headquarters for clarifications on the issue.
According to Mr. Etiebet, although there was an endorsement by the party, PDP did not exclude or preclude other aspirants from other senatorial districts from contesting for Akwa Ibom State governorship election.
The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, had said the party expected that “only aspirants from Eket Senatorial Zone will present themselves for the governorship primary election in the state.”
But, Mr. Etiebet said the national leadership of the party had confided in him that they would not prevent any aspirant from other senatorial districts from contesting the seat.
He said he had personally spoken to the National Chairman of PDP, Adamu Mu’azu, his Deputy, Uche Sekondus, among others, on the matter.
The PDP leadership, Mr. Etiebet stated, was merely endorsing what the party in the state said, but did not exclude or preclude anybody from any other senatorial zone, to put in his or her application for the governorship seat.
He said that even if there were 20 of such aspirants, they are all welcome to participate in the race. Mr. Etiebet said when he asked Mr. Sekondus if state executive would not collect the nomination form from candidates from other zones, he (Sekondus) said, “No!”
Mr. Etiebet assured that if such a situation occurs, the national leadership of the party would bring the nomination form of all other aspirants to them in Abuja, and they would be proclaimed valid candidates to stand in for the nomination exercise.
The former Minister said he was also told that the party had chosen to open the contest to all aspirants in the state in the spirit of democracy.
“They (PDP) said it did not preclude in the spirit of democracy, in the spirit of giving all Nigeria a level playing field to participate, in the spirit of proper internal democracy and in the spirit of having a popular candidate, who can win the election for the party.
“Therefore, I call on every eligible aspirant from any senatorial district of Akwa-Ibom state, who wants to aspire to be the governor of Akw-Ibom state, to go ahead to mobilize their supporters, and make sure that they win their delegates, because nobody is going to preclude them from taking part in this exercise,” Mr. Etiebet said.

Capello: Ronaldo not as skilful as Messi

goal.com
The Italian coach says Barcelona player is capable of things that other players are not, revealing he tried to sign him on loan for Juventus in 2005
Russia boss Fabio Capello says Cristiano Ronaldo "does not possess the pure technical skill" of Lionel Messi.
Ronaldo is the current Ballon d'Or holder and widely expected to retain the individual honour on the back of a prolific year in which he fired Real Madrid to Champions League glory.
However, while Capello has the utmost respect for the Portugal international's explosive power, the Italian coach does not believe that the 29-year-old is as skilful as the Barcelona No.10.
"Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi are two extraordinary players but they are different," the former Madrid boss is quoted as saying by AS.
"Cristiano is a powerful player, with very good technique, but he does not possess the pure technical skill of Messi.
"Leo Messi is a very difficult player to play against."
Indeed, Capello revealed that he first came to realise just how much natural talent the Argentine was blessed with during former club Juventus' Gamper Trophy clash with Barca in 2005.
Messi terrorised a Bianconeri defence led by Fabio Cannavaro, prompting Capello to take the unusual step of making an approach to sign the then teenager while the game was still going on.
"It's completely true that I asked [then Blaugrana boss Frank] Rijkaard if he would loan me Messi," the 68-year-old confirmed.
"When the play had stopped for a minute I went over to Rijkaard and said: 'You can't play him because you've got three foreigners already. Why don't you let me have him for a year?'
"Rijkaard replied: 'We're going to clear up the situation in three or four months and for that reason I can't do it.'
"That's why Messi's [Barca] debut was last in coming. I knew the value of my defender and when I saw Messi play I knew he was special.
"I could see that he could do things that didn't occur to other players."
Messi is a four-time Ballon d'Or winner and currently poised to become the Spanish league's all-time top goalscorer.

Klopp: Bayern will be punished for bad behaviour

goal.com
The Borussia Dortmund boss has criticised the champions for making comments about the transfer situation of Marco Reus and says their conduct could come back to bite them.

Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp  has launched a thinly-veiled attack on Bayern Munich, saying that those who behave badly at the top will eventually pay the price for their actions.
The champions infuriated the 47-year-old this week after chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge talked openly about the transfer situation of Dortmund attacker Marco Reus.
And the Dortmund boss, whose team currently lie 15th in the Bundesliga with just seven points from their opening nine games, accused the current league leaders of kicking his club when they are down.
"In a period where both [teams] are at the top, it's fun to reply to any [questions]," Klopp was quoted as saying by Bild , adding that he knows "nothing of what is going on right now" regarding the star's situation.
"In our current position, where this causes relatively little enjoyment, it is just not worth it.
"However, I believe that life is fair. Whoever behaves badly while they succeed, can get payback [later].
"We currently do not have the problem of having to behave well during a period of success, because we are not in one," he jokingly added.
Earlier this week Rummenigge had told Bild : "We know in Munich that [Reus] has a lot of quality. For us a young German national player of such quality is interesting. But I do not want to cause unrest in Dortmund."
The war of words will add even more spice to an already mouth-watering clash between the two German giants at the Allianz Arena in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Breaking records is in Ronaldo's DNA - Santos

The Portugal boss has heaped praise on his team's captain, who has been in free-scoring form for club side Real Madrid this season, adding that he is a "born winner"

Portugal coach Fernando Santos says breaking records is in Cristiano Ronaldo's DNA.
The Real Madrid forward has been in free-scoring form so far this season, notching 16 goals in eight league appearances.
And the star recently broke his own record at the club by scoring in 11 consecutive games.
Santos, meanwhile, was effusive in his praise of the 29-year-old, telling Portuguese radio stationRenascenca that he is a "born winner" and that his desire to "win and break records" is "part of his DNA".
The former Greece trainer added that he hopes the attacker can "break another record by capturing a trophy with the national team".
He added: "And if it could be at the upcoming European Championships [in France in 2016], that'd be terrific.
"Of course I want to win the Euros and so do the players. We will fight to do so. I believe it can happen. If other countries can do it, why can't we?"

Burkina Faso parliament set ablaze

BBC News
Protesters angry at plans to allow Burkina Faso's President Blaise Compaore to extend his 27-year-rule have set fire to parliament.
Correspondents say the city hall and ruling party headquarters are also in flames.
A huge crowd is surging towards the presidential palace and the main airport has been shut.
MPs have suspended a vote on changing the constitution to allow Mr Compaore to stand for re-election next year.
Five people have been killed in the protests, among the most serious against Mr Compaore's rule, reports BBC Afrique's Yacouba Ouedraogo from the capital.
The military fired live bullets as protesters stormed parliament, our correspondent says.
Journalists are now gathered outside the defence ministry awaiting a statement from the military, he says.

Witnesses say dozens of soldiers have joined the protests, including a former defence minister, Gen Kouame Lougue.
The main opposition leader, Zephirin Diabre, has called on the military to side with "the people".

Mr Compaore's whereabouts are unknown, but he has appealed for calm via Twitter.
He first took power in a coup in 1987, and has won four disputed elections since then.
At the scene: Joost Laane, speaking to BBC Focus on Africa
I am in an area where many MPs live and I have seen two of their homes set ablaze and smoke coming out of another two or three homes. Hotel Azalai, one of the main hotels in the city, is also on fire.
Two helicopters flew over my house - the president's and a normal helicopter. I cannot confirm whether the president was in one of them.
No-one knows what is going to happen next. It is chaotic and tense. We hear sporadic gunfire.
There is no TV anymore. So we are depending on internet access and phone calls. The 3G network and the texting system are blocked.
The opposition has called for a campaign of civil disobedience to demand that he steps down in elections next year.
"October 30 is Burkina Faso's black spring, like the Arab Spring," opposition activist Emile Pargui Pare told AFP news agency.

  • Protests at attempts to amend the term limits began a year ago, fuelled by the high cost of living
A massive crowd has also converged on the main square in Ouagadougou and is marching towards the presidential palace, which is about 5km (three miles) away, our reporter says.
A government helicopter flying overhead was firing tear gas at them, Reuters reports.
There are also reports of protests in the south-western city of Bobo Dioulasso.
The government has been forced to suspend Thursday's parliamentary vote on a constitutional amendment that would have lifted the limit on presidential terms so that Mr Compaore could run for office again in 2015.
It is not clear whether the government intends to hold the vote at a later stage, correspondents say.
Mr Compaore is a staunch ally of the US and France, which uses Burkina Faso as a base for military operations against militant Islamists in the Sahel region.
Both France and the European Union (EU) have called on him to scrap the proposed constitutional amendment.
The EU said it could jeopardise Burkina Faso's stability. The US has also raised concern about the proposed amendment.

Ebola outbreak: UK aid ship docks in Sierra Leone

A UK ship has arrived in Sierra Leone to help deal with the deadly Ebola outbreak in the West African country.
Royal Fleet Auxiliary Argus is carrying food, medical equipment and 32 pick-up trucks, to help keep hard-pressed Ebola treatment centres going.
Doctors, nurses and military personnel are also on board. The ship has docked in the capital, Freetown.
Ebola has killed nearly 5,000 people and infected more than 10,000 in West Africa since March.
RFA Argus, which is also equipped with three Royal Navy Merlin helicopters, set sail from Falmouth in Cornwall on 17 October, and the BBC's Africa correspondent Andrew Harding said it would act as an offshore base for the aid effort.

In all, the UK is deploying about 750 military personnel to help tackle Ebola in Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Defence has said.
Speaking from Freetown, RFA Argus commanding officer Captain David Eagles said the helicopters were a "game changer" in the fight against the disease.
"To be able to fly equipment and experts right into the heart of the areas it is needed will be a fundamental change in the way we do business. It will give the effort ashore much greater agility and velocity to deliver the mission," he Sky News.
"For the people on-board the ship, it is just simply a case of rolling up their sleeves and getting in and contributing as best we can, and our people are very much looking forward to that."

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has described the RFA Argus mission as a sign of the nation's "determination to lead the world's efforts to tackle the Ebola crisis".
There is no cure or vaccine for Ebola, which is transmitted through sweat, blood and saliva, and has a 21-day incubation period.
An appeal for the Ebola crisis in West Africa has been launched by the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), and it marks the first time the committee - a group of 13 UK aid charities - has sought funds over a disease outbreak.
Appeals will be made by all the main UK broadcasters on Thursday, and the government has said it will match the first £5m of donations made by the public to the DEC appeal.
More than 13,700 people have been sickened in the Ebola outbreak, the vast majority in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
