War vets see 'sinister plot' to oust Robert Mugabe

Cape Town – Zimbabwe's chairperson of the National Liberation War Veterans Association, Jabulani Sibanda, has reportedly warned there is a "sinister plot" within the ruling Zanu-PF party to oust President Robert Mugabe.

Sibanda, according to Daily News said there were elements within Zanu-PF who were using the First Lady Grace Mugabe to get rid of Mugabe, 90.

This comes as tensions continue to rock the revolutionary party following the ongoing attacks against Vice President Joice Mujuru and other party officials by the First Lady.

Grace, who is set to take over as leader of the women's wing of Mugabe's Zanu-PF party, has accused Mujuru of betraying the president by mobilising support for a possible challenge for the party leadership at a December congress.

The First Lady has since called on Mujuru to resign, saying there were plenty of people who could lead Zimbabwe.

But Sibanda maintained Grace was being used by some elements within the party, saying the officials were playing "smoke and mirror games" to hoodwink people not to see their real agenda.

Grace, a 49-year-old former typist, was recently nominated as secretary of Zanu-PF's powerful women's league.

Confirmation of her position at the party congress in December would propel her into the party's powerful politburo.

Meanwhile, Southern Eye reports that one of Mugabe's former allies Dumiso Dabengwa has noted the difference between the present Zanu-PF and the one under which he served before leaving the party in 2008.

Dabengwa said in the past, Zanu-PF members were disciplined and personal attacks were limited to central committee and politburo meetings.

Dabengwa warned that Grace’s utterances about the vice president and other party officials could soon catch up with her.
