The campaign office of the All Progressives Congress in Refinery Road, Effurun in Delta State has been set ablaze by unknown gunmen, just as the state holds its local government election.
Eyewitnesses, who chose not to be named, told Channels Television that some gunmen drove into the building premises in a Toyota Camry saloon car on Saturday, destroyed the chairs and properties in the premises before setting the building ablaze.
They said when police officers, who were just a few miles were alerted, they drove down in their Hilux van but quickly reversed and drove off without a word.
The fire in the building sent heavy mast of smoke in the air and onlookers watched with no attempt to put-off the blazing fire.
The fire incident is coming just at the state begins the conduct of the local government election for councillors and chairmen.
As the accreditation process began, there were reports of traffic congestion at the Sapele Benin express, caused by police checkpoints mounted at different locations across the state.
Commuters expressed worries over the traffic jam and urged appropriate bodies to make Federal roads free for them to travel while the election holds.
The election holding in 25 local government councils in Delta State is seen as crucial, as it will give an insight into what the 2015 general elections will be like in the state ruled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
More than 10 political parties are involved in the contest. Opposition political parties with the exception of some in some selected local governments showed much seriousness in the campaign preceding the election.
The State publicity secretary of the PDP, Mr Ray Macaulay, had told reporters that the PDP Was fully prepared for the election.
“You are aware our candidates went round their respective Local Government Areas campaigning whereas the other parties went to sleep waiting for miracle from heaven,” he said.
