A legal practitioner and a delegate at the just concluded National Conference, Mr Goddy Uwazuirike on Thursday called for a change in the manner at which candidates for elective positions have to go back to their localities to contest for them.

“In those days Nnamdi Azikiwe was elected from Lagos, the Mayor of Enugu was a Muslim; a Hausa-Fulani, Zamfara had an Igbo man there and in Kano, there were many Yoruba people representing them”, he said, wondering “how we have now realised that this person is from this place”, insisting that “it doesn’t make sense”.
Mr Uwazuirike said the “freedom from discrimination was guaranteed” under Section 42 (1) (b) of the 1999 Constitution which, was quick to add that “it has always been breached”.
He added the delegates at the National Conference “insisted on this same resolution” adding that “they are re-emphasising and re-enforcing it”.
He further noted that “no law can ever be made to abrogate that freedom of association, freedom of residence and the right to education”.
He insisted that every Nigerian should be allowed to live, work, attend educational institutions and enjoy all the rights and privileges enjoyed by other Nigerians accordingly.
He however noted that for Nigerians to fully accept such a situation, the government must lead the way, adding that “believe you me, people will follow suit”.

The legal practitioner also spoke about other amendments in the 1999 Constitution.
