The National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, in Gombe State has arrested two brothers for illegal possession of firearms and hard drugs.
The commandant of the agency, Aliyu Adole, told journalists in Gombe on Tuesday that the suspects were arrested with a “Jericho pistol with three life ammunition and 300 grams of psychotropic substances”.
He named the brothers as 30-year-old Mijinyawa Shehu and 25-year-old Abdul Shehu of Wangi-Zange village in Dukku Local Government Area of the state.
“We went for an operation in their village and got information that the (younger) brother sells psychotropic substances and other drugs. While we were there, we intercepted the brother and went inside their room for a search.
“Immediately the (elder) brother saw us, he rushed into the room trying to hide something. We rushed in and found it was a pistol that he was trying to hide and on searching him we found one live bullet inside his pocket and three other live bullets under his pillow.
“From the (younger) brother, we seized 300 grams of psychotropic substances,” he said.
According to the official, the suspect had been in possession of the pistol for over two years.
Mr. Adole said the elder Shehu who was found in possession of the gun would be handed over to the police for further investigation while his brother would be charged to the Federal High court for dealing in hard drugs.
The elder Shehu confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES that the pistol was in his possession for over two years. According to him, he found the gun in a bush after the 2015 general elections while rearing their cattle. He said none of his relations knew about the pistol up to the time he was arrested and he did not make use of it.
