The Senate has commenced the screening of those nominated by President Muhammadu Buhari as Resident Electoral Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The lawmakers began the screening on Wednesday, weeks after the refused to carry out the exercise as a result of their standoff with the Presidency over the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mr Ibrahim Magu.
President Buhari had forwarded the names of 27 REC nominees to the Senate on March 23.
Five days later, on March 28 refused to screen the nominees after criticising the President for keeping Magu as acting EFCC Chairman even though they had rejected him twice.
They also accused Buhari’s appointees of disrespecting and disregarding the Senate.
Following their decision to proceed with the exercise on Wednesday, eight of the REC nominees were screened with more expected to appear before the lawmakers on Thursday.
