The Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, has promised that he would continue to give Nigerian youths opportunities to serve their country.
The President made this promise on Sunday at an interactive session tagged ‘Meet The President’, which was attended by an estimated 5,000 Nigerian youths and members of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP in Lagos, South-West Nigeria.
While emphasizing the value his government places on the Nigerian youths, President Jonathan reminded the young audience of his government’s past efforts at empowering the youths.
“The only thing that made me to become the President of Nigeria is because I went to school. That was why we made it a priority to establish 12 new universities in the past five years.
“The Asian Tigers (Malaysia, Indonesia and so on) are great because of small and medium enterprises. It is our mission to create new millionaires among you all through various youth empowerment policies,” the President said.
He also boasted that the PDP states have been exceptional in creating the infrastructure to enable the growth of small businesses.
“The only states that have built first class airports are the PDP states. Even in presidential lodges across the country, only those of PDP states are in superb state.
“Within this space of time, nobody has intervened in Education, Agriculture and Healthcare more than this government.”
Reacting to a question about his plans for young men and women in the country, President Jonathan said that he planned to host ‘town-hall meetings’ in various geopolitical zones quarterly as platform for young people.
“At the federal level we have relatively high number of young people. My future administration will have even more,” President Jonathan added.
The event, which had several Nigerian media and entertainment celebrities in attendance, was an avenue to relate with the President in an informal setting, with all accredited participants being offered chances to ask him questions.
There were also musical performances by several artistes as well as campaign speeches by select Nollywood stars and youth leaders.
Also in attendance were the PDP National Youth Leader, Abdullahi Maibasira; former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi; Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko and former Minister of Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro.
The Lagos State PDP Governorship Candidate, Jimi Agbaje, was also at the event. He told the youths that the “best option” for Nigeria was Goodluck Jonathan.
