The ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has congratulated President Goodluck Jonathan for taking an early lead in the result of Saturday’s presidential election as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission so far.
The INEC chairman, Attahiru Jega, had Monday announced the results of nine states including the FCT.
The result released showed that APC won five out of eight States, while the PDP won three.
But Mr. Jonathan has scored 2,322,734 votes already while APC’s Muhammadu Buhari has scored 2,302,978 votes.
The PDP spokesperson, Olisa Metuh, who addressed a press conference in his office in Abuja, said the result released so far indicates that Mr. Jonathan is leading by total number of votes, which he said will be the determining factor at the end of the collation.
Mr. Metuh said “we congratulate our president for the victory so far as we look forward to results from other states.
“We are not interested in the number of states won, but the total number of votes at the end of collation and the constitutional requirement of scoring 25% in 2/3 number of states, “he said.
The PDP spokesperson also said the party had issues with the use of card reader for the election, which he said denied many of their supporters the chance to vote.
He said the party will forward its petition at the right time to the INEC and urged the party’s supporters to obey the law.
“We have directed our members with issues to petition INEC and ask that no one should engage in any illegal act, we must avoid unlawful protests “engaging in illegal protests in democracy is deceitful,” he said.
