Residents of Calabar took to the streets on Monday to protest what they described as “doctored election results”.
The protesters marched through major streets of Calabar carrying placards with various inscriptions.
There had been widespread allegations in the state that Governor Liyel Imoke was working hard to manipulate Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections.
However, on Sunday, the governor rebuffed the allegation in a statement on Sunday by his Press Secretary, Christian Ita.
“It was a desperate move by a drowning opposition who wants to remain afloat by holding unto the straw,” the statement said.
He advised anyone who may be dissatisfied with the election results to seek redress at the court.
However, residents of the state took to the streets to protest the election results especially that of the National Assembly.
“This is a governor who couldn’t even deliver his ward,” one of the protesters said. “We are going to put a stop to this. The governor has murdered sleep, he can never sleep.”
There has been no official reaction from the government on the protests at the time of filling this report. Calls to Mr. Ita went unanswered.
