The Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu has described football as big business and promised that the state will pay adequate attention to support the sector.
He said this when Nigeria Football Federation President, Amaju Pinick and officials of the NFF visited him at the Government House, Umuahia.
He expressed the hope that football in the country will witness great transformation and growth under Pinick’s administration.
Governor Ikpeazu, who said Abia is the only state that sponsors three teams, disclosed that the Nsulu Games Village will soon be open for all forms of sporting activities in the state.
He said “I have no doubt that football will begin to record giant strides and Nigeria will begin to return to her glory days and even surpass her past records,
“I want to assure the NFF President of the support of Abia state to move Nigerian football forward and I want to say that this administration is committed to pay adequate attention to the sector.
“I want you to know that Abia State has world class footballers in the likes of Nwankwo Kanu, Uche Okechukwu among many other great football in the country,
“My promise to you is that the state will remain a repository of soccer stars both at the amateur and professional levels to do the country proud.”
The NFF President told journalists that the federation’s recent resolve to limit the government, corporate bodies and individuals from sponsoring more than one club in the league from next football season was in line with best international practices that would enhance the game in the country.
