The Police have arrested a suspected gang Leader in Ogun State for impersonation and for the murder of a middle aged motorboy after an altercation in Abeokuta, the state capital.
Parading the suspect alongside other suspects at the state command of the Police, the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, said the suspect was a leader of a robbery gang allegedly terrorizing residents in many parts of the capital.
According to Mr Iliyasu, the suspect had brought an unregistered Sienna vehicle to one Alaja car wash, Leme Abeokuta and later on, got involved in an argument with a motorboy who was identified as Rasaq.
In the heat of the argument, he was said to have shot the boy, who died instantly.
Although the suspect fled the scene immediately, he was found and arrested after intelligence investigation.
“It was also gathered that the suspect had escaped to the Republic of Togo. Based on this information, the Federal SARS swung into full scale deployment of technically driven intelligence investigation and were able to trace and lure the culprit back to Nigeria and get him arrested just about 48 hours after the incident.”
The Police were able to recover one Avar Pump Action gun, 43 live cartridges, two camouflage Army trousers, one knicker, one jungle cap and seven pairs of different vehicle plate numbers.
The CP further stated that “preliminary investigation so far revealed that the suspect is a leader of a notorious armed bandit terrorizing Abeokuta and its environs. His gang is said to be into snatching of vehicles, kidnapping and impersonating as military officers, to dupe unsuspecting members of the public, but the game is up now”.
The suspect however confessed to have committed the crime, claiming that the incident was a mistake.
“I thought the boy was a driver, I started arguing with him and the boy did not reverse his vehicle as directed by me. I wanted to deflate his tyre that was when the argument came in.
“I do not know that the riffle was already cocked. I shook the gun, he was dragging it with me and I pressed the trigger and the boy died,” he explained.
While assuring residents of adequate security of life and property, the commissioner however, challenged them to avail the security officials with useful information that would help in the arrest of criminals across the state.
