Hundreds of thousands of supporters of the All Progressives Congress on Sunday besieged the state headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Port Harcourt demanding the cancellation of Saturday’s elections in the state.
The party faithful sang solidarity songs and carried placards bearing inscriptions like “INEC in Rivers State is an arm of PDP,” “No Rigging in Rivers election,” “Electoral officers in Rivers State have compromised with PDP,” among others.
The stretch of the highway between the NDDC headquarters to the GRA Junction were blocked to vehicular traffic.
One of the party’s chieftains and member of the House of Representatives arrived at the scene of the protest amidst cheers from the crowd.
As he walked in, the mob busted into a chant, “We must vote. We must vote. We must vote.”
Stern-looking security personnel stationed automatic weapons and armoured tanks in front of the INEC.
As at the time of filling this report, no leader of the party has addressed the mob.
Meanwhile, an international observer team, led by Jennifer Lyne, said the team is not satisfied with the way elections were conducted in Rivers State.
She cited widespread irregularities in the way INEC conducted the Saturday election.
“We are not satisfied with the way the election was conducted,” she said.
“The election was not credible and was marred by irregularities.”
The state chapter of the APC had issued a statement Saturday night calling for the cancellation of the result in the state.
