Argungu (Kebbi) – Dr Abdullahi Yahaya, a senator-elect for Kebbi North senatorial district, said on Saturday that the use of the card reader in the 2015 general elections had minimised the incidence of rigging and election violence in the country.

Yahaya stated this while speaking with journalists shortly after casting his vote at the Sama Secondary School in Argungu for the governorship and state house of assembly elections.
He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to retain and improve on the use of the smart card in future elections.

“The few instances where the card reader failed can be tolerated but it had helped in eliminating terrible rigging and violence and we can only hope to improve for democracy to be entrenched.
“In spite of the challenges faced on the card reader, the facility had contributed in prventing violent reactions over election result collation and reports.
“I strongly urge INEC to improve on training of officials on use of the the reader during future elections.”

The senator-elect said the turnout of voters, especially during the Presidential and National Assembly elections, was an indication of voters’ confidence that their voters would count.
It will be recalled Abdullahi (APC) defeated the incumbent Gov. Saidu Dakingari (PDP) with 139,197 votes against 70,148 votes in the Kebbi North Senatorial election.
