The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed the House of Assembly election in Ekwusigo Constituency in Anambra State.
INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Mr. Edwin Nwatarali, announced this in a press statement and fixed April 25 for the rescheduled poll.
The shift followed the snatching of sensitive and non-sensitive materials from the INEC office at Ozubulu, the headquarters of the Ekwusigo Local Government Area, by persons believed to be political thugs.
Members of the National Youth Service Corps, who were part of INEC ad hoc staff, were seen milling around the office not having anything to do.
Meanwhile, Governor Willie Obiano has condemned the invasion of the INEC office at Ekwusigo by thugs, and also some pockets of violence in Nnewi.
He, however, praised the conduct of the election after being accredited at Aguleri Primary school, saying that INEC performed better in the state assembly poll in the state.
Besides the violence in Ekwusigo and Nnewi, it was gathered that the election was peaceful in several other parts of the state, while in other areas such as Anaocha, Nri and Ihiala, there were some challenges but INEC gave the assurance that it would ensure a level-playing field for all the stakeholders and that the votes of the electorate would count.
