The Senator-Elect for Ogun State, East, Buruji Kashamu, has denied reports that he is planning to dump his party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for All Progressives Congress, APC, in the aftermath of the APC’s presidential election victory.
Mr. Kashamu, a controversial politician wanted in the United States on drug related charges, won the Senate seat on the platform of PDP on Saturday.
However, few days after the election, which saw the ruling PDP losing the presidency, Mr. Kashamu was rumoured to be making moves to join the APC.
Some reports said Mr. Kashamu was planning to join the party to maintain the protection he currently enjoys from the PDP. The PDP-led government has been accused to shielding Mr. Kashamu from facing trial in the U.S.
Mr. Kashamu is also in a running battle with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, believed to be close to the APC.
Mr. Kashamu however told PREMIUM TIMES, Friday, that reports claiming that he intends to join the APC, were false.
“Where do you get such speculation? It is not true,” he told our correspondent on the phone.
