Sellers and buyers of goods at the popular Eke Awka market, which is also the major market in Awka, the capital of Anambra Sate, are lamenting the increase in the cost of items.
The traders say a basket of tomatoes sold for 4,000 Naira before now is presently sold between 15,000 and 16,000 Naira.
A bag of Garri which they used to buy for 6,000 Naira now sells for 10,000 Naira.
Aside blaming the Easter season for the price hike, they also said fuel scarcity was the major issue.
For months now the supply of fuel has been with hitches, as vehicles queue at different fuel service stations to get petrol, a situation the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation had at different times said would abate. Despite their promises, the scarcity has continued.
At the Eke Awka market known for its huge business activity, shops were on a mandatory closure for traders to observe the Good Friday Prayers.
However, roadside business still thrive but major complaints from both sellers and buyers remained the high cost of items especially food stuff.
