Match Summary

There were chances for both sides throughout, but not even the introduction of Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard was enough to conjure up a goal at the Bridge.

There was, however, a bit of drama late on when David Luiz got himself a stupid red card for a reckless kick on Sead Kolasinac in the closing stages.

The Blues put the pressure on during the opening stages, showing intent with a couple of early half-chances. Alvaro Morata, who has been most deadly with his head since arriving in London, got their best early opening after 12 minutes thanks to a cross from Cesar Azpilicueta, but headed wide.

Having seen very little of the balls early on, the Gunners fashioned a great chance in the 17th minute when Hector Bellerin crossed for Danny Welbeck to head just wide. Just a minute later and Alexandre Lacazette got a similar chance, but Thibaut Courtois was in the way.

Former Barcelona teammates Cesc Fabregas and Pedro Rodriguez linked up well in the 21st minute, with the former picking out the latter from deep. Pedro raced onto the ball to find himself one-on-one with Petr Cech, but he waited to long and Cech made the save.

Arsenal could, and really should, have gone ahead just before halftime when Aaron Ramsey bullied his way into the penalty box and was able to poke it past Courtois and back off the far post, with Lacazette following up on the rebound and agonisingly firing off-target.

The match was simmering well as the second half got going, with Morata and Mustafi developing a personal battle of pushing, shirt-pulling, and looking for a free-kick in their favour.

As the 70th minute arrived both teams decided to employ their star attackers. Alexis Sanchez appeared for Arsenal, coming on for Lacazette. In response, Chelsea took of Willian for Eden Hazard.

Mustafi had the ball in the back of the net in the 76th minute with a header from Xhaka’s corner, but the German defender was very offside, and it didn’t stand.

For a moment, it looked like Hazard would make the breakthrough when he ran at the defence with the ball at his feet and worked a shot, but he sent it straight into the arms of Cech.

David Luiz lost his mind late on as he tried to play it out from the back. He got past Alexis Sanchez, but acted far too casual with the Chilean snapping at his heels. The pressure from behind, plus Kolasinac approaching, saw the Brazilian take a wild swing to clear, and the ref brandished a straight red card.
