The 49-year-old former Sant Andreu head coach had achieved promotion to the third tier with the Las Palmas B-team in the 2016/17 season and was promptly appointed first team manager, replacing Quique Setien.

After losing his first two game of the season, Márquez guided Las Palmas to two victories, over Malaga and Athletic Club.

But he has since decided to step down from his post after a 1-0 defeat to Sevilla was followed up with a 2-0 defeat at home to Leganes.

Juan Carlos Valeron and Paquito Ortiz will take temporary charge of the side, with their first test a trip to Barcelona on Sunday.

Márquez revealed his decision to leave the club in the following statement: "Another manager will be able to do a better job than me. Honesty has to prevail over everything else, and I feel I have let the President down.

"In life sometimes you have to make decisions you don't like, and it is not due to Sunday's defeat. I am grateful to the club for the wonderful opportunity they gave me to manage the team I have supported all my life, especially the president, who was right behind me from the beginning.

"I am sorry to have let him down. Honesty has to prevail over all else. Someone else will come along who will do a better job than me.

"I am convinced the team will stay up, because we have a great squad. I have an excellent relationship with the players", he stressed. He doesn't consider his resignation as a failure, rather a matter of dignity.

"Last night when I made my decision, I spoke to the four team captains and I told them what was happening. My decision is a more personal one.

"During these months in the first division, more than learning, I take with me the experience of having done it, and you never know in time there might be a second chance to return to the manager's bench."

Márquez will remain at the club in the Scouting and Training Department.
