Match Summary

The Blues were the better team for much of the first half but found themselves behind at the break, courtesy of Antoine Griezmann's 40th-minute penalty.

They responded early in the second half, however, when Alvaro Morata headed home from close range and Michy Batshuayi popped up at the death to complete the comeback win.

The hosts made a bright start, but Antonio Conte's side quickly got a foothold in the game and Eden Hazard turned on the gas in the opposition half before feeding Morata, who fired wide of the left post from inside the box on the right in the fifth minute.

Hazard then hit the side-netting from an acute angle on the left moments later, and he combined again with Morata on eight minutes which resulted in the Spanish striker shooting past the left post from a similar position to his first effort.

The roles were reversed on 13 minutes when the Belgian star received a pass from Morata and turned sharply to get off a shot that was deflected onto the right post, with Jan Oblak beaten.

Oblak had to be alert on 26 minutes as Morata connected with David Luiz's lofted cross, with the keeper tipping his header over the crossbar, and he made a more routine save from Hazard's snapshot 20 yards out a minute later.

However, Atletico opened the scoring against the run of play five minutes before half-time after they won a penalty when Luiz dragged down Lucas Hernandez at a corner, with Griezmann slotting home coolly from 12 yards out.

Marcos Alonso and Gary Cahill saw their respective shots deflected off target as the visitors looked to respond, while Saul steered wide on the rebound after Koke's long-range drive was parried back into the danger area by Thibaut Courtois on the stroke of half-time.

Saul threatened four minutes after the restart with a header that he directed wide at the back post from Koke's free-kick, before Victor Moses drilled an effort wide of the left post from Hazard's square pass on 55 minutes.

But the Premier League champions hit back just four minutes later when Hazard's delightful cross from the left was glanced into the right corner of the net by Morata.

Cesc Fabregas squandered a golden opportunity to put the Blues ahead soon afterwards when he missed the target from just six yards out, having got on the end of Hazard's low cross from the right on 62 minutes.

Morata then beat the offside trap on 74 minutes and advanced on goal before steering the ball wide of the right post from the left, while substitute Fernando Torres found space for a shot from long range that was comfortably gathered by Courtois two minutes later.

Atletico pushed for a late winner and Griezmann hit a tame shot on the turn wide of the right post on 85 minutes as he latched onto a stray Chelsea pass just outside the box.

Jose Gimenez almost made the visitors pay for backing off in stoppage with a shot from the edge of the box that flew over the bar, but the Blues won it with the final kick as Michy Batshuayi converted Alonso's cross at close range.
