The Red Devils made a strong start and had the home crowd celebrating after just four minutes with an opening goal out of the top drawer.
Nemanja Matic played the ball across the edge of the box for United skipper Valencia, who arrowed a first-time shot into the top-left corner of the net from 20 yards out.
The hosts went on to dominate proceedings for much of the first half, although Ronald Koeman's men played with greater enterprise in the closing stages.
Wayne Rooney should perhaps have done better in the 21st minute when he sent Cuco Martina away down the right flank and received the return pass, but United's all-time record goalscorer dragged his shot wide of the left post from 17 yards out.
Romelu Lukaku then wasted the best chance of the game five minutes later as he latched onto Juan Mata's through-ball after Michael Keane had been dispossessed, but the former Everton striker missed the target from just eight yards out with Jordan Pickford beaten.
Lukaku was denied by a combination of Pickford and Phil Jagielka on 38 minutes after being played in on the left by Marcus Rashford, in what was the final action of the opening 45 minutes.
Rooney almost equalised moments after the restart as he received Tom Davies' pass and advanced on goal before forcing a sharp save out of David De Gea from close range.
Rashford was wasteful soon afterwards with an effort from an angle on the left that went well wide of the mark, while De Gea had to be alert at the other end on 61 minutes to keep out Gylfi Sigurdsson at his near post from close range on the right.
Mata was unfortunate to strike the left post with his free-kick four minutes later after being brought down just outside the box on the left, and Jesse Lingard fired over from 10 yards out having been found in space by Ashley Young on the left in the 70th minute.
United kept grinding away with Lingard seeing an effort deflected over off Ashley Williams four minutes later and Matic flashed a shot just wide of the right post soon afterwards.
Their efforts were rewarded seven minutes from time when Williams lost possession to Marouane Fellaini, who played Lukaku in on the right and he picked out an unmarked Henrikh Mkhitaryan to slot home at the back post.
Lukaku got on the scoresheet himself in the final minute as he tucked away Lingard's flick at the far post, having seen his initial free-kick blocked but was in the right place at the right time after Matic sent the ball back in.
Sandro almost pulled one back moments later with a well-taken left-footed strike that had to be tipped over by De Gea, and Anthony Martial sealed the win from the penalty spot in stoppage time, after Morgan Schneiderlin handled from the Frenchman inside the area.
