Germany's number one Neuer recently suffered a recurrence of the foot injury he picked up against Real Madrid in the Champions League last season, and has been ruled out until early next year.
As such, Sven Ulreich and Christian Fruchtl were the only two keepers available to Ancelotti, who has since confirmed that Starke will come out of retirement to provide some added support in the goalkeeping department.
The 36-year-old officially retired at the end of 2016/17, however, he was involved with the Bavarians pre-season preparations while uncertainty surrounded Neuer's return. In addition to returning to the Bundesliga squad, the veteran has been added to the club's UEFA Champions League selection, and should be available to face Paris Saint-Germain, if chosen, on Wednesday.
Italian mentor Ancelotti told reporters, "Tom will be with us until Manuel returns. He's the third-choice keeper, Christian Fruchtl is second (behind Sven Ulreich)."
