A second half free kick from the midfielder condemned the defending champions to defeat in their Nigeria topflight opener at the Liberation Stadium. Enyimba were unable to begin their title defence of the Nigeria Professional Football League with a win, bowing 1-0 to Rivers United at the Liberation Stadium on Sunday evening.
Frederick Obomate’s 64th minute free kick ensured the hosts recorded their second win against the Peoples Elephants in seven years.
Having lost the Charity Shield to Akwa United on Wednesday, the Aba side came into the game with the intention of getting at result from the encounter – which will put them in the right frame of mind against Vipers in the return leg of their Caf Champions League preliminary round, but it was the hosts who had the last laugh in the keenly contested encounter.
After a slow start to the encounter, the defending champions woke up from their slumber but were unable to get the curtain raiser as Ezekiel Bassey, Christian Pyagbara and Bartolomew Ibenegbu failing to get past goalkeeper Sunday Rotimi.
The hosts too had several of their chances saved by goalkeeper Femi Thomas who made a return to the Aba Elephants starting line up. However, it was Obomate that had the final say with his 64th minute free-kick that sailed past Thomas. Even with the introduction of Andrew Abalogu for Kamal Sikiru, the Aba giants  failed to snatch the equaliser as they returned home with heads bowed low.
