The former Giallorossi left-back played alongside the 39-year-old for three years at the Stadio Olimpico and insists the club legend does not expect preferential treatment. Former Roma left-back John Arne Riise insists Francesco Totti does not expect preferential treatment at the Stadio Olimpico.
Totti was left out of the Roma squad to face Palermo on Sunday evening after publicly criticising manager Luciano Spalletti. The 39-year-old, who claimed he had not been shown enough respect by the new Giallorossiboss, reportedly stormed out when he was told he would not be involved in the weekend's Serie A clash with the Sicilians.
But Riise, speaking exclusively to Goal last week, insists Totti does not demand to be treated differently to any other player.
"During my time at Roma, I did not get that feeling," he replied after being asked whether Roma coaches are under pressure to play Totti.
"However, for us players it was better to have him on the pitch because we would feel safer and also mentally stronger due to his presence alone.
"But he does everything that any other player does; he is not treated as a special player, be that in terms of training or playing time.
"With all due respect to the other players, Francesco Totti is like a god. I knew a lot about him before I joined Roma but he actually surprised me when I was his team-mate. He is very polite, very kind, cracks jokes all the time and is very helpful.
"It is very tough for all of us to imagine Roma without its king!" This interview was arranged by Betsson, who John Arne Riise is an ambassador of together with other celebrities. Besides gambling, Betsson also involves itself in society by motivating and inspiring ordinary people to chase their dreams. Being represented by celebrities who achieved milestones in their respective careers is an important tool of inspiration for all its followers.
