A new speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly has been elected after the resignation of the former.
The Speaker of assembly, Josiah Kente, resigned his position Monday.
Mark Useni was elected as replacement.
Mr. Kente told journalists on Monday in Jalingo that he has forwarded his resignation letter to the Clerk of the assembly.
He said he took the decision in the interest of peace in the state.
Mr. Kente was elected speaker in November 2013, following the death of his predecessor, Haruna Tsokwa.
Taraba State has seen a number of changes in its political leadership in the last one week since the removal of the former acting governor, Garba Umar, by the Supreme Court.
Mr. Umar was replaced by Abubakar Danladi, a former deputy governor.
On Friday, Mr. Danladi fired all political appointees of his predecessor.
The former speaker, Mr. Kente, a loyalist of the sacked acting governor, Mr. Umar, left office under pressure from supporters of the new acting governor.
As speaker, he led the calls for the removal of Danbaba Suntai, the substantive governor of Taraba State, who has been ill for two years after an air crash.
Since Mr. Umar’s removal, his supporters have teamed up with the new acting governor.
Indications that lawmakers had abandoned their former leader came Friday evening when many of them, popularly called G-16, showed up at the Jalingo airport to welcome Mr. Danladi after the Supreme Court verdict.
Mr. Kente is younger brother of David Kente, a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, aspirant in the upcoming governorship election.
Sources said he resigned after it became clear lawmakers were set to impeach him.
