The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has rescheduled the distribution of the Permanent Voters Card, PVC, and the Continuous Voters Registration in six states to ensure the effectiveness of the exercise and mitigate difficulties encountered in the previous exercises.
The states are Lagos, Rivers, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Niger and Borno all of which were in the third phase of the exercise alongside seven other states.
The distribution of PVC was trailed by different challenges as residents of the states complained of alleged plans by INEC to disenfranchise them.
The INEC Chairman, Attahiru Jega, announced the new dates for the exercises at a meeting with leaders of the 22 registered political parties on Thursday.
The meeting, held at INEC headquarters in Abuja, was convened to update the parties on the on-going production of PVC, and the preparation for CVR in the six states where the exercise is yet to be conducted.
Mr. Jega said in Rivers and Nasarawa States as well as the remaining nine LGs in Lagos State, the PVC distribution will take place from November 28 to 30 while CVR distribution holds between December 3 and 8.
In Kaduna and Katsina States, the PVC distribution will hold between December 6 and 8 while CVR takes place from December 10 to 15.
The distribution of the PVCs will hold in Niger and Borno State between December 12 and 14 while that of CVR is scheduled for December 17 to December 22.
At the meeting, the Commission presented a progress report on the production of PVCs and explained lingering challenges necessitating a readjustment in the previously announced schedule for distribution of the cards and CVR in the outstanding states.
In their response, the party leaders expressed understanding and pledged full support for the Commission’s efforts.
