Crude oil theft in the country has reduced from 2.4 million barrels monthly to 800,000 barrels as at the last count in September.

This was according to the Flag Officer Commanding, Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abiora Medani during a sea inspection exercise and a show of fire power.
The Navy, has in recent times harped on its campaign against oil bunkers in the country. It will be recalled that the Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Usman Jubrin, recently tasked international oil companies to support the efforts of the Nigerian Navy in the fight against oil theft, vandalism and bunkering.
Speaking during a meeting with international oil giants in Abuja, the Naval Chief accused oil majors as being accessories to oil theft as some of them have deliberately left their oil well heads open for years .
Also, recently, stakeholders gathered for a 2-day conference organided by the Nigerian Navy, as part of activities marking its 58th anniversary, hopeful that remedies to the heightened activities of pirates, who are bent on milking the nation dry through pipeline vandalism, oil theft and other related offenses, are found.
It was stated at that conference that increased budgetary allocation to the Nigerian Navy and other maritime security agencies can ensure effective combat of crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism in the country’s waterways.
Howvever, the Rear Admiral Abiora Medani has further emphasised that due to the improvement of the security situation on the nation’s waterways occasioned by their presence on the sea, the country has witnessed an increase in Foreign Direct Investments.

The exercise involved war formations in the navigation of ships, the positioning of armed officers, and then target shooting.
