Fear has enveloped Jimeta and Yola, Adamawa state, with hundreds fleeing the towns, following Boko Haram’s attack on Mubi.
The residents, mostly those from the southern, western and eastern parts of Nigeria, filled motor parks in a panic, as they hastened to leave the state.
Nnamdi Azubike, a businessman in Yola, said, “I can no longer stay here. We heard they would visit Mubi and they did. The security personnel are not doing enough to arrest the problem. I’d rather go and die at home than allow (Boko Haram) kill me like a goat.”
Abby Olayemi, a motor mechanic, said “I am living Yola for good. I and my wife can no longer stay in Adamawa. I lost my father in 2011 when these gunmen attacked our church. I can’t be bitten twice. We are leaving Adamawa.”
At the Jambutu Park, travellers were stranded as all the buses and cars scheduled to leave on Monday were fully booked since Friday.
When PREMIUM TIMES visited the park, hundreds of people were seen making frantic efforts to get tickets for Thursday and Friday; tickets for Tuesday and Wednesday were already booked.
At the Sunshine Park, the story was the same. Even vehicles going to other parts of the state were booked in advance.
At some private transport companies’ parks, the situation seemed rather pathetic as travellers were forced to sleep at the parks in order to get available tickets, purchased at exorbitant prices.
PREMIUM TIMES gathered that the fare to Onitsha as at Wednesday morning was N4,050 but on Monday, tickets were sold from N8,500 up to N10,000.
