An opposition political party in Nigeria, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called for an impartial international commission of enquiry to investigate and unmask perpetrators of terrorism in the north-east.
The national chairman of the APC, Mr John Oyegun, told a news conference in Abuja on Thursday that the government needed to make the system more responsive to the issues instead of calling for a ceasefire.
He said that the alleged ceasefire agreement had only made the people more vulnerable, appealing to the international community to remain vigilant on the crisis.
Analysing the security challenges, the APC leader emphasised that some people might be exploiting the security crisis for political advantages.
The opposition further noted that the government had failed to stop corruption and impunity.
The party leader further asked the Nigerian government to desist from ceasefire agreements which he said had left the people in the north-east region more vulnerable.
The APC’s comment coming just as suicide bombings and terrorist attacks were on the increase and spreading to new states.
In a persistent fashion, scores of children and families continue to meet their untimely death owing to terrorist attacks which have intensified in the north east in the last one month.
The terrorist group’s ambitions are very clear but how the Federal Government has tackled the challenge so far raises more questions than answers.
The Nigerian government had on October 17 announced that it had reached a ceasefire agreement with the Boko Haram sect, but less than 48 after the ceasefire agreement was announced the members of sect attacked two villages in Borno State.
After the attacks, some elders in Borno State expressed doubts that the ceasefire agreement was reached with the legitimate leadership of the terrorist group.
