Full report

Having already sacked manager Luis Zubeldía prior to the fixture after a dismal start to the season, Alaves were faced up against a wounded Real Madrid side.

Seven points off the pace of league leaders Barcelona after a shock 1-1 midweek defeat at the hands of Real Betis, Los Blancos were ready to make a statement against the out of sorts relegation candidates.

And after a rocky start, they eventually took the lead in the tenth minute when Marco Asensio provided a cut-back for midfielder Dani Ceballos, who used his strength to muscle Ely off the ball and smash the ball home from 20-yards out.

However, the home side restored parity five minutes before the half-time whistle through their inspirational leader Manu Garcia. Their captain's bullet header after a swift counter-attack was the home sides first goal of the new season.

But their celebrations were short-lived as Ceballos put Zinedine Zidane's side ahead for the second time of the afternoon with another deft finish - after goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco failed to clear the danger, with a poor punch from Cristiano Ronaldo's cross.

In the second-half Sergio Ramos had a goal disallowed and Alaves hit the post twice through Alfonso Pedraza but failed to find a much-needed equaliser, as Real were made to sweat for the three points away from home.
