Abuja - The Lagos State Electricity Board has announced plans by government to commission the 8.8 megawatt Mainland Independent Power Plant as part of activities commemorating the Energy Conservation Month 2014.
Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) would formally switch on the power plant on October 31.
According to a statement the General Manager, Lagos State Electricity Board, Damilola Ogunbiyi, issued in Lagos, government is committed to its holistic plan to meet the power needs of Lagos.
“The power need of Lagos, Nigeria’s industrial and commercial nerve centre and one of the world’s fastest growing Megacities is huge. To this end, the Lagos State Government has launched several initiatives to meet the power need of its people across domestic, industrial and commercial spheres” Ogunbiyi said.”

She explained that part of the steps taken so far by the Fashola administration include the implementation of a strategic energy development plan which entails the creation of a fully-fledged Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Lagos State Electricity Board , launch of Independent Power Projects as well as the dedication of October as the Energy Conservation Month.

The Energy Conservation Month, which debuted in 2013, has become an annual event commemorated by the state government.
Ogunbiyi clarified the intent of Lagos State Electricity Board for introducing The Energy Conservation Month.
“It is essentially a Behavioural Change Campaign dubbed as ‘Conserve Energy, Save Money’ (CESM) and aimed at promoting the practice of efficient use of available electric power.”
The Power Plant located at the Government Reservation Area Ikeja will ensure 24-hour uninterrupted supply to a number of public institutions including the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja High Court Complex, Old Secretariat Complex and Ikeja Water Works.
It will guarantee over 20km of public Lighting to select streets around Ikeja.
