APC, PDP Lawmakers Bicker Over Promised 5,000 Naira Stipend

The All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers in the Senate on Wednesday voted against the immediate implementation of the payment of 5,000 Naira to unemployed Nigerians, a campaign promise made by the APC during the last presidential election.
In his contribution to a motion on an urgent need to curb the soaring rate of unemployment in Nigeria, Senator Philip Aduda recommended that the Federal Government should fulfil its campaign promise of giving 5,000 Naira to unemployed persons.
The issue divided the lawmakers along party lines, a recollection of what had happened last week, during the confirmation of a ministerial nominee and the former Governor of Rivers State, Mr Chibuike Amaechi.
In the Cabinet chambers on Wednesday, the lawmakers from the opposition, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who for the first time since the return of democracy in 1999 have found themselves in the opposition, and the members of the ruling party, the APC, disagreed over the promised stipend, when it was brought up for debate.
Senators from the ruling APC were against the recommendation, which resulted in a back and forth argument between lawmakers from the PDP and APC.
The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, however, put the issue forward for voting and the APC lawmakers had the day.
