The Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, has held talks with heads of security agencies, a traditional ruler, community leaders and Muslim clerics to develop fresh strategies to prevent attacks on places of worship which is on the increase.
At the meeting held on Sunday were The General Officer Commanding the 7th Division of the Nigerian Army in Maiduguri, the Police Commissioner, the Director of the DSS, the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Elkanemi, Imams of mosques in Maiduguri, community leaders and other senior officers of security agencies.
The meeting was held at the Government House Multipurpose Hall in Maiduguri, the capital of the state.
It was convened by Governor Shettima with the aim of preventing recent tricks deployed by suspected Boko Haram insurgents who attack worshippers at predawn prayers in mosques around Maiduguri.
The meeting began hours after four suicide bombers died in an unsuccessful attack.
Governor Shettima told the participants that similar meetings would be held by the Emirs of Biu and Shani and other local government areas that were not yet under attack in order for worshippers not to be taken unawares.
Participants at the meeting are expected to use their offices to ensure that worshippers in every mosque across the over 30 wards in Maiduguri, Jere and surrounding areas adhere strictly to the resolutions reached at the meeting in order to enhance community policing.
The Shehu of Borno is confident that the resolutions would chart a course for a safer Borno State.
Security representatives also underscored the importance of collaboration to face insurgency head on.
On Friday, two attacks on mosques in Maiduguri and Yola claimed at least 36 lives.
Six persons were killed when a suicide bomber attacked a mosque in Maiduguriwhile 30 others were killed in another attack on a mosque in Yola hours later.
