The umbrella body of all Nigeria’s registered political parties, Inter-Party Advisory Council of Nigeria, IPAC, has appealed for commitment to credible and violence- free electoral process by all individuals and institutions involved in the February general elections.
The group made the appeal in a statement by its publicity secretary, Godson Okoye, on Wednesday.
It called “for free, fair, credible, acceptable and violence free general election in February,” while noting that “the 2015 election is a defining moment for Nigerians to showcase our rich political culture and democratic encounter.”
While stressing optimism that the polls would be transparent and peaceful, IPAC, however, urged political parties to support the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, in deepening and strengthening Nigeria’s democracy by abiding by the code of conduct which they had already subscribed to.
It also appealed to registered voters who are yet to get permanent voters’ card to ensure they are not disenfranchised by going to secure their cards.
“IPAC enjoins all registered voters who have not collected their permanent voters’ cards to go INEC offices at their respective Local Government Areas and collect them so as not to be disenfranchised,” the statement urged.
The group announced its plan to organise nationwide public enlightenment programme in collaboration with INEC and enjoined political parties to participate.
It said, “IPAC in conjunction with INEC will embark on public enlightenment programme in all the six geopolitical zones in the country starting with North Central zone which will hold in Abuja on 10th January 2015. The road-show will kick off from Garki II Model Market, Abuja from 9.am.”
