A faction of the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, led by Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State, has slammed a former governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Chukwuma Soludo, over his critical remarks about the country’s economy under the Goodluck Jonathan Presidency.
Mr. Soludo, who was CBN Governor between 2004 and 2009, had in a recent article scored the Jonathan administration an “F” in the management of the economy.
He also said the president and the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari, have no clear agenda on how to improve the nation’s economy.
In a statement by on Wednesday, the Secretary and Administrator of the Forum, Osaro Onaiwu, described Mr. Soludo’s description of the economy as “illusionary and attention seeking.”
The forum said it was “at loss as to the motive behind the article as the half truths and falsehood in the article could not be a sincere attempt to contribute to the national discuss, but rather a failed attempt at self aggrandisement”.
It said the former CBN governor’s analysis “flies in the face of all the conclusions and projections of renowned international economic bodies that the Nigerian economy was not only the largest in Africa, but was bound to continue its growth”.
It said it was surprised why a former CBN governor would be against a state governor saving money for the raining day since even the present shortfall in allocations vindicates such policies.
The forum called on Mr. Soludo “to carry out an honest and objective travel around the country where he will find out that governors have continued to improve on their internally generated revenue which indicates growth and a bustling economy howbeit with challenges that are not peculiar to Nigeria”.
