The Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, on Wednesday ordered the prosecution of suspects arrested for political thuggery during campaigns at different locations.
The police said the suspects were arrested for perpetrating violence during political campaigns at various locations.
The police spokesperson, Emmanuel Ojukwu, in a statement said, “The IGP has therefore ordered their immediate prosecution in the court of law no matter their status in the society.”
He said the suspects activities are contrary to section 227 of the 1999 constitution (as amended) and sections 94 and 95 of the Electoral Act.
Mr. Abba had on January 24 directed all Zonal Assistant Inspector Generals of Police and Commissioners of Police to crackdown on all political thugs in their zones and commands.
Furthermore, Mr. Abba has advised politicians to play the game by the rules as the police force will not condone act of hooliganism. He also assured Nigerians of their safety while calling for their support for the police force.
