Osun State government says it is set to arrest and prosecute offending residents who are involved in the primitive act of defecating openly in the state.
A Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Sanitation and Physical Planning, Mr Adewale Ojo, gave the warning while speaking to Channels Television in Osogbo the capital of the state.
Architect Ojo disclosed that relevant government agencies had been directed to swing into action and perform their duties in order to ensure that the people of the state conform with health and environmental regulations.
“We have discovered that many homes do not have the required facilities such as waste disposal, toilets and free drainage, especially in the rural areas.
“This has in no small measure contributed to the high rate of disease thereby increasing the number of people who visit the hospitals for various ailments, ranging from diarrhoea to typhoid fever and other ailments.
“The State government will no longer tolerate this. So, those in this act should try and build toilets and waste disposal in their homes. Anyone caught in open defecation, particularly in dump sites, will be made to face the sanctions, as prescribed by the regulatory agencies,” he stressed.
The Permanent Secretary then enjoined all landlords and property owners to ensure that all buildings, structures and shops in the state have toilet facilities.
“I wonder why Landlords will build shops, malls and other business facilities without building toilets for the people who are to occupy these places.
“This is the major reason why many resort to using dump sites, gutters and back of buildings as places for defecation.
“It does not only pollute the air, the health of all those around that area is in great danger. The long term effect is very deadly
“We are appealing to our people to imbibe the culture of healthy living. Nothing can be compared to good health for the citizens. The government will clamp down severely on defaulters who are caught at any time without mercy. So people should learn to desist from this act,” he further stressed.
The Permanent Secretary says he believes that strict adherence to this rule will safeguard the health of the people, guarantee healthy living and prevent unnecessary spending on purchase of drugs and curing of preventable diseases.
