In commemoration of Nigeria’s 56th Independence Day, the Nigerian Army at an annual celebratory camp fire night, has assured widows of their support in absence of their loved ones.
The General Officer Commanding 2 division of the Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Odogbo Ibadan, Major General Kasimu Abdulkarim, said this while addressing officers, men and wives of soldiers who had lost their lives in the battle against insurgents in the country.
He told the widows present that they are not forgotten as the division is looking into ways of empowering them.
This he said, is in order to enable them cater for their children, in the absence of their loved ones.
The commander added that the widows would soon be empowered as a list of their needs had been compiled for necessary action.
He also used the occasion to assure the management, staff and students of the University of Ibadan, as well as people in the state that proactive steps are being taken to avoid any breach of peace as rumored against the institution in the last few days.
“Security operatives will continue to confront all manner of threats domestic and foreign, against the territorial integrity and unity of Nigeria despite the odds,” he said.
He allayed fears in the hearts of parents and students of the state’s university, saying that “the institution will continue to be fortified against any threats”.
He reminded them of the rumours of an impending attack against U.I that circulated prior to the Independence Day celebration.
He however added that “security was beefed up around the institution to forestall any unprecedented attacks”.
On maintaining national security, and sustainable development, Major General Abdulkarim charged all Nigerians to be more supportive of leaders so they can make policies that would directly improve the lives of citizens.
