Abia Govt. Vows To Pay Outstanding Workers’ Salaries

CHANNELS TV
The Abia State Government has expressed willingness to clear all salary arrears owed its workforce with the promise to continue to alternate salary payments, as this would ensure that all workers are paid full salaries without deductions of any sort.
While speaking to Channels Television in Umuahia, the Finance Commissioner, Obinna Oriaku, hinted that because of an ongoing biometric exercise, the state was owing one month salary in some ministries, departments and agencies.
Pensioners and local government workers were owed four months and the hospital management and some parastatals were owed five months’ salary arrears.
According to the Finance Commissioner, the rumor making round that the state cannot pay salaries is not true.
He disclosed that those being owed up to four months were those undergoing the biometric exercise. He urged the workers to be patient as everything was being put in place to ensure they get their salary soon.
However, the Nigerian Labour Congress in the state, led by Uche Obigwe has frowned at this development, especially the arrears owed pensioners.
He said that this would have been avoided if the past administration had done the needful with funds available at their disposal.
