A consolidated bill aimed at providing for what must happen in the event of death of a governorship candidate, before conclusion of an election, scaled second reading at the House of Representatives on Wednesday.
PREMIUM TIMES understands that the bill, sponsored by the House Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila, and others, is a legislative response to the stalemate generated due to the death of Abubakar Audu, All Progressives Congress candidate who died just as he was winning the November 21, Kogi governorship election.
The election is now a subject of litigation.
“This proposed legislation seeks to pluck that lacuna to allow the deputy governor of a governorship election automatically take over in the event of the death of the governorship candidate,” Mr. Gbajabiamila said in his lead debate.
The bill also seeks amendment of the Amend the Electoral Act 2010 to empower election tribunals and courts to declare candidates who score highest votes as winners of election when the tribunal or court holds that the winner of the election is unqualified for election ab initio.
Six election-related bills were consolidated, after initial introduction by Mr. Gbajabiamila, Edward Pwajok, Sunday Kareem and Uzoma Nkem-Abonta.
In Nigeria’s parliamentary practice, related bills are consolidated at the second reading.
