The lawmaker representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District, Fatima Raji-Rasaki, on Friday said the persistent outage in the country is caused by negligence and insincerity of people in the power sector.
Ms. Raji-Rasaki said this in an interview in Abuja.
She said the interactive session held by the Ad-hoc Committee on Power with people in the sector revealed lots of discrepancies in reports submitted.
The lawmaker also noted that the sector had suffered negligence and insincerity over the years.
She disclosed that a public hearing, where all stakeholders would converge to find lasting solution to the problem, was underway.
“Committees set up in the past could not find a lasting solution to the problems in the power sector.
“We in the 8th Senate are therefore determined to continue from where they stopped and ensure that we solve this problem once and for all,’’ she said.
Speaking on the recent improvement in power supply, the lawmaker said: “It is the fear that the new administration might move against them that led to the improvement.
“The power sector has not satisfied the yearnings of Nigerians over the years and this has adversely affected sustainable development in the country.
“Factories are closing down every day and manufacturers are moving to other countries.’’
She said that even solar power, an alternative energy, had not been effective as street lights being powered by it, were not working effectively.
