The extra ordinary summit of the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) has called on the military junta in Burkina Faso to hand over power to the interim administration immediately while the country awaits the conduct of a general election, which they say should be shifted to November.
Chairman of the commission and the President of Senegal Macky Sally said this in his address at the opening session of the summit holding in Abuja Nigeria.
Host President, Muhammadu Buhari, in his opening speech commended the West African leaders for their commitment to the pursuit of peace and stability in the sub region.
He said the recent development on Burkina Faso runs contrary to the expectations of ECOWAS and commended the efforts so far deployed towards the restoration of constitutional order and and democracy by the ECOWAS, AU, UN and the international development partners.
President Buhari commended the ECOWAS chairman and his Benin Republic counterpart, who undertook the visit to Ouagadougou on September 17, to commence the process of engagement with the military junta and the understanding reached towards the resolution of the crisis.
Present at the meeting include the Presidents of Cote D’voire, Togo, Mali, Guinea, Ghana, Niger, Benin and Senegal.
