Some 48 hours after it imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Maiduguri, the troubled capital of Borno state, military authorities Saturday announced that residents can go out for their normal daily activities as the restrictions has been lifted.
Unlike with the previous curfew that was 7pm to 6am, residents of Maiduguri are now onlyallowed to move about from 8am to 5am daily.
The spokesperson of the 7 Division, Nigerian Army, Tukur Gusau, a colonel, said the current regime of curfew would remain in force till further notice.
Mr. Gusau, a Deputy Director Army Public Relations, made this known via a statement distributed to journalists in Maiduguri.
“The 7 Division Nigerian Army has, after reviewing security situation in Maiduguri, decided to relax the curfew”, the statement read.
“Movement is now from 8:00am – 5:00pm untill further notice.
“The residents of Maiduguri are advice to continue with their normal activities within the stipulated period and also continue to monitor the media for updates”.
Residents of Maiduguri, who had since been lamenting deprivation as a result of the curfew, could not wait any longer as they bolted out of their locked homes rushing to their various places of sourcing for daily bread in order to beat the new curfew hours.
The army authorities had on Thursday slammed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Maiduguri following an attempted attack on the town by Boko Haram terrorists.
The attack was, however, foiled even as lives were lost in the surrounding villages where the soldiers battled the insurgents.
There were speculations that the terrorists came with about 600 women suicide bombers who they intended to unleash on the city to cause deadly explosions in targeted populated area.
PREMIUM TIMES has not been able to independently verify that.
