Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima on Sunday commended Borno youths, who came out in numbers to defend Maiduguri from being overran by insurgents who laid siege on Dalwa from Damboa axis and from the Mafa entry point of the troubled state capital.
Today’s attack comes one week after the sect launched another attack from Damaturu-Jimtilo axis with same motive of taking over Maiduguri but the attack was repelled by the military who deployed massive artillery and fighter jets to displace them, killing scores of the dreaded sect members.
Governor Shettima’s commendation comes after the insurgents were successfully repelled by patriotic and resilient armed forces firmly supported by youth volunteers who left their homes to the battle front in defense of their fatherland.
A statement issued by the Governor’s spokesman Isa Gusau, quoted the governors as saying “I received with gratitude, information on how youths from different parts of Borno State, comprising those under the Borno Youths Empowerment Scheme otherwise called “Civilian JTF”, vigilantes and other residents of Maiduguri, came out of their homes, abandon their families and with very uncommon courage, they sacrificed their lives and moved to front lines to support our gallant armed forces in a patriotic battle to defend the soul of Borno State and its people from being seized by determined insurgents
“I have never been as proud of our youths in Borno State as much as I am today. The youths have since 2013 rose in firm defense of the good people of Borno State, and today, they have once again proved to all of us” the statement reads in part
The statement expressed optimism that as a people, “we can overcome the threat of insurgents whose desire is to send us, our families and communities into extinction”
The statement also saluted the gallantry of the armed forces, who have since the inception of the insurgency, remained resolute in the clarion call to fight the dreaded terrorists, adding that his administration will continue to give the necessary support to ensure the defeat of the militants.
“We will, as a government, continue to afford them all they need within the limits of resources at our disposal in reclaiming captured territories and safeguarding others that are free as well as safeguarding lives and property”, he said.
The statement commiserate with those injured and those who might have lost property during the invasion assuring that he will continue to work hard to change the situation for the better.
The statement urges residents to continue to accord the necessary cooperate to armed forces in the fight to defeat the terrorists
