The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has adjusted its food supply pattern to meet nutritional needs of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Borno State.
Food items supplied to the state government now contain variety of grains and ready to use nutritional supplements for children.
The Zonal Coordinator of the Agency, Mohammed Kanar, said that the items would be released to the state emergency agency biweekly in batches.
He said that the agency would continue to evaluate and monitor usage of the items given in camps to ensure it gets to the intended beneficiaries.
NEMA officials have also urged the government to make proactive plans to receive more IDPS as the Nigerian military continues to liberate more towns.
The Deputy Governor of Borno State, Usman Durkwa says the government will complement NEMA’s effort by providing other food items as agreed upon in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between them.
Officials of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) welcomed the new phase of intervention which they said would cushion the suffering of IDPs, especially those in satellite camps.
One of the IDPs, Gambo Bukar, explained that any time it rained they had nowhere to stay. Some of them had to go out to sleep on the tarred road because of flooding in their camp, according to him.
He stated that there were so many challenges that the help they get does not go round. He urged the entire nation to help the IDPs all over the country.
The Borno State government has been battling with rising cases of malnourished children and adults in satellite makeshift camps, mostly found in recently liberated towns.
Over 1,000 people have already been relocated from Bama local council to Maiduguri, the capital city for proper care.
The latest supply from the NEMA included 8,000 bags of 25kg rice, 3,000 bags of beans, 1,200 bags of maize and 1,000 bags of 50kg millet for consumption in camps around the capital city.
