The Editor of Egypt’s top state newspaper, is calling on authorities to seriously deal with the case of Giulio Regeni, the late Italian student who was tortured and killed in Cairo earlier in the year, warning that if nothing is done, it could break Egyptian-Italian relations.
In a significant move, a private Italian tourism group promoting “responsible tourism” announced the suspension of all activities in Egypt, including organising travel packages, “until the tragic event of Regeni’s murder is clarified.”
Egyptian authorities insist they are cooperating fully with Italy and a team of Egyptian prosecutors is headed to Rome later this week to review the case with their Italian counterparts.
They will review photos related to Regeni’s movements and meetings since his arrival in Cairo, as well as details of the investigations carried out after his disappearance, according to state-run newspaper Al-Akhbar.
The delegation will also provide Italy with information about the recently killed gang with whom Regeni’s personal belongings were found.
Regini disappeared on January 25, this year and his brutally tortured body was found nine days later by the side of a road in a Cairo suburb. His corpse showed physical signs of torture, such as cigarette burns and electrocution of the genitals.
28-year-old Guilio Regeni was a PhD student at the University of Cambridge and had been in Cairo as a visiting scholar at the American University in Cairo (AUC).
