The President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Muhammad Garba, has been appointed Commissioner of Information by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State.
Mr. Garba was sworn in Saturday alongside 13 other new appointees including Mr. Ganduje’s deputy, Hafiz Abubakar, who has been assigned the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
A release by Mr. Ganduje’s spokesperson, Baba Dantiye, also showed that a former national youth leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, Farouk Farouk was named commissioner of Land and Physical Planning.
Other appointees include Nasiru Gawuna, Ministry of Agriculture; Kabiru Dandago, Ministry of Finance; Murtala Garo, Ministry for Local Government; and Zubaida Shari, Ministry of Women Affairs.
Other commissioners sworn in are Haruna Falali, Ministry of Justice; Kabiru Getso, Ministry of Health; Ali Makoda, Ministry of Environment; Aisha Bello, Budget and Planning; Usman Riruwai, Water Resources; Ahmad Bako, Ministry of Commerce; and Haruna Lambu, Ministry of Works and Housing.
Mr. Ganduje had during the inauguration announced the reduction of salaries and allowances of political office holders by half, in view of the prevailing economic realities in the state.
He announced that those affected include, the governor, his deputy, the13 commissioners and special advisers.
Kano is the second state after Kaduna to reduce salaries of public officials in the last three weeks.
Governor Ganduje lamented that the state and the nation are facing a cash crunch and need to reduce the remuneration of appointees and elected officials.
He said the action was part of the sacrifice he and others will pay for the survival of the government.
The governor assured that when things get better government officials would be rewarded for their sacrifice.
