Nigerian Army in conjunction with the British Army is strategising a 20-year Development Plan to improve the service.
This was disclosed by the director, Military Intelligence, Letam Wiwa, a major-general.
Mr. Wiwa, who is the chairman of the Committee set up to work out the development strategy, said this at a two-day seminar in Abuja.
He said the seminar was the offshoot of the series of meeting held by the committee to work out the development plan for the Nigerian Army.
He said the need to have such a plan arose from the current security challenges facing the country.
“This resulted in the conveying of a committee to work out the long term development strategy based on achievable milestone with a view to countering the challenges effectively,” he said. “The aim, among other things, is to enhance the state of combat readiness and general national development in line with the development agenda of the Federal Government.
“In order to achieve this goal, various inputs had been sought and obtained from sources within and outside the Nigerian Army. It is in this light that the seminar is organised with the British Army to share their experience on transformation as well as give useful input in the area of interest of the committee.”
The director, military intelligence, said the audience at the seminar was enlarged to accommodate more officers beside the committee members in order to generate useful discussions that would be beneficial to the committee’s work.
“I therefore seek full cooperation in terms of active participation all through the seminar so that it will indeed be a worthwhile venture for both the Nigerian Army and the British Army,” he said.
He commended the British Army for accepting the request of the Nigerian Army to contribute to their efforts to improve.
On his part, the leader of the British Army, David Cullen, a major-general, who is also the United Kingdom Assistant Chief of the General Staff, said the British Army had in the last few years, gone through fairly major transformations.
“Change is not a criticism as it has been in the past; it is about making good better,” Mr. Cullen said.
He said the progress made by the Nigerian Military in the war against Boko Haram had been impressive.
He said when there was an engagement with any form of insurgency, that insurgency changed every time.
“And, therefore, you need to change with it and this is what the Nigerian Army is seeking to do by using our experiences,” he said.
The committee was set up in January 2015 by the Chief of Army Staff, Kenneth Minimah, a lieutenant-general, to work out the 20-year development plan.
