A Lagos-based lawyer, Festus Keyamo, has petitioned the Chief of Naval Staff, Usman Jibrin, asking him to investigate the alleged murder of Peter Afounge by some naval officers attached to the naval base, Satellite Town, in Lagos.
Mr. Keyamo, who wrote the Chief of Naval staff on behalf of the deceased’s mother, Bibian Afounge, said Mr. Afounge was arrested at his residence, 44 Aganga Williams street, Ajangbadi, Lagos on April 7.
Mr. Keyamo sought to know the offence of Mr. Afounge that warranted his arrest by naval officers who failed to hand him over to the Nigerian police. He also asked why there were blood stains and bruises on the body of the deceased.
The lawyer also asked what led to the death of Mr. Afounge who was in the custody of the navy and why the navy conducted an autopsy on the body without the presence and consent of his family.
Mr. Keyamo said the family of the deceased were prevented from seeing him on April 8.
But upon a report of a missing person to the Satellite town police station on April 26, on April 28, he said, the family “were allowed to see the lifeless body of the deceased at the naval base mortuary… the lifeless body was mutilated with obvious mark of electronic iron”.
